HDFC Bank's part-time chairman Atanu Chakraborty, who joined the board in May 2021, tendered his resignation with immediate effect.

The resignation alone was not what unsettled the market. It was the words he chose. In his resignation letter, he wrote: "Certain happenings and practices within the bank, that I have observed over the last two years, are not in congruence with my personal values and ethics." That one statement was enough to shake investor confidence across the board.

The market reacted badly. HDFC Bank's stock fell more than 5%, wiping out more than $7 billion in market value in a single session.

HDFC Bank moved quickly. The bank arranged a call to assure investors that all was well. The RBI stated there are no material concerns on record regarding the bank's conduct or governance.
