Gargi Sarkar and Aavassditya Raya, two Masters students from the Dept. of Mass Communication, Darjeeling Hills University, presented their well-researched dissertations today as their semester study came to a close and so did their fruitful stay at DHU.
Gargi chose to raise questions about how cultures are represented in mainstream Hindi films, particularly Bengali culture in her dissertation, SELECTIVE REPRESENTATION OF BENGALI CULTURE IN ROCKY AUR RANI KII PREM KAHAANI. According to her study, at the surface level, the Bengali family is shown as intellectual, artistic, progressive and culturally refined. However, a deeper analysis showed that this portrayal is selective and does not fully represent the complexity of real Bengali society.
Aavassditya chose to study the visual code of Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai and his Suzuiqi Trilogy, which includes Days of Being Wild (1990), In the Mood for Love (2000), and 2046 (2004). In his dissertation, A STUDY OF COLOUR AND VISUAL STORYTELLING IN WONG KAR-WAI’S SUZUIQI TRILOGY, Aavassditya explored how colours function as more than just a look and how the director uses different colour temperatures and saturation to show the audience the difference between the cold reality of the present and the warm, often distorted version of a character’s memory.
Under the insightful supervision of Dr. Smriti Rai, both students were encouraged to carefully investigate the raison d'être behind these studies and its usefulness in their academic lives.

Shri Raghu Rai, a doyen of photography in India, breathed his last on the 26th of April 2026. In his long career as a visual documenter of epochal events and people who have shaped our country, he left an indelible legacy for us to cherish and remember him. From the heart wrenching tragedies witnessed during the 1971 war for liberation of Bangladesh and the devastation left in it's wake, uprooting people and whole villages, the brutalities inflicted upon men and women to the unforgiving Bhopal gas tragedy. His images have frozen time for us to reflect upon the nature of man and what all he is capable of in his extremities. From hospitals filled with unfortunate children who inhaled the poisonous gas to the reassuring presence of Mother Teresa in a Kolkata ward to the anchoring presence of the Dalai Lama at a mountain congregation to the corridors of power captured through the stark silhouette of Ms. Indira Gandhi, his photographs carry that certain gravitas found in the works of masters.
Darjeeling Hills University paid homage to this great man on the 13th of May 2026 by converting one of our hallways into a temporary galley displaying his seminal photographs. The students of the Dept. of Mass communication and the English Dept. became curators for the day and guided the enthusiastic crowd of staff, students and faculty through each sections of the exhibition. Later, a short masterclass video by Shri Raghu Rai was shown to the gathering. Taking inspiration from the life and works of the master photographer, a PowerPoint presentation consisting of four selected photographs of similar themes was presented by the participating students Soyal Rai, Siddhi Vinayak Chhetri and Biswa Mandal. It was heartening to see the master being celebrated and venerated by a new generation of leaners. We pray that Shri Raghu Rai’s philosophy of inculcating ‘tapasya’ and ‘samadhi’ in one’s work will be remembered and imbibed by our students in their own lives.
