Prioritise energy security for keeping growth momentum going: Prof. Nagesh Kumar
PTI, May 05, 2026
The ongoing West Asia conflict has highlighted India's structural vulnerability to energy shocks, reinforcing the need to reduce dependence on imported crude and accelerate efforts to strengthen energy security, according to an external member of the RBI's rate-setting panel.
Prof. Nagesh Kumar, who is the director of the Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID) and also a part of the Monetary Policy Committee, said the Indian approach needs to focus both on stepping up oil exploration domestically and hastening the transition to alternative sources.
"The high dependence on imported crude makes the Indian economy highly vulnerable to volatility in the hydrocarbons market. While India's macroeconomic fundamentals remain resilient, and the Indian economy will continue to remain the fastest growing major economy with a growth rate of nearly 7% in 2026-27, it is time to prioritise energy security and resilience for sustaining the accelerating economic growth trajectory," Prof. Kumar said in an interview with .

West Asia conflict prompted MPC status quo, flag external sector risks
Business Standard, April 22, 2026
The ongoing West Asia conflict weighed on the Monetary Policy Committee’s (MPC’s) deliberations at its April meeting, with members unanimously voting to keep the policy repo rate unchanged and retain a neutral stance amid heightened uncertainty.
Prof. Nagesh Kumar, External Member, RBI’s MPC, and Director, ISID, also flagged a worsening external position. “With the weak global economy affecting the growth of exports and crude prices pushing the import bill, the current account deficit, which has stayed in the comfortable range of 1.5 per cent of GDP in the past, is likely to worsen,” Kumar said. Prudence requires a status quo on monetary policy, while keeping a close watch on West Asia developments, he added.
