With a deep sense of loss and grief, we mourn the passing of Professor Tan Sri Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas (1931–2026), one of the most influential Muslim philosophers and intellectuals of the contemporary era. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, students, and admirers across the world.

Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas was not merely a scholar but a visionary thinker whose work profoundly shaped modern Islamic intellectual discourse. He was among the thinkers who are globally recognised for their contributions in pioneering the concept of the “Islamisation of knowledge”, a project aimed at reconstructing contemporary disciplines within the framework of the Islamic worldview and liberating knowledge from secular distortions.

Through his seminal writings, including Islam and Secularism and Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Islam, he provided a deep philosophical critique of modernity while articulating a coherent vision of Islamic epistemology rooted in revelation, reason, and metaphysics. His intellectual contributions inspired generations of scholars working on Islam-inspired knowledge traditions, civilisational studies, and ethical frameworks for contemporary sciences.
