The finger food is on the plate. Your baby is ready and interested. But you — you just can’t hand it to them.

I understand that fear. But your fear may actually be limiting your baby’s skill development more than that food ever will.

Six to nine months is the golden period for learning to eat. At this age, your baby’s eating reflexes are very, very strong. Their gagging and coughing reflexes are designed to push food out and keep them safe. This is their body working — not a warning sign.

Many of us think — once my baby is bigger, then I will give finger foods. But babies actually learn to eat safely better when they are younger — not older. Waiting doesn’t make it safer. It makes it harder.

Two things to learn before your next meal:
✅ Gagging is loud — it is safe. Choking is silent — act immediately.
✅ Squish test — mash it between your fingers. If it’s easy — it’s safe to offer.

You just need to be watchful — not scared.

If you want to know exactly which textures, which foods, in what order, and how to read your baby’s cues — join my Starting Solids class. Link in bio.

Be aware. Be educated. Not scared. Let solids be a fun journey. 🌿

She did everything they asked. And she still felt like she was failing..

The weighted feed said 0.4 oz.
The LC said pump 8 times.
The paediatrician said crib.
And she sat alone at 2am wondering if her body had failed. It hadn’t. She was just completely alone in a system that was never built for her.

This is the thing nobody in your antenatal class warned you about. Your milk supply is connected to whether you feel safe, supported, and seen. And “supported” in an Indian family looks nothing like what any Western postpartum protocol was designed for.

I am a feeding therapist and an IBCLC. I have sat with Indian mothers for 15 years — in hospitals in Gurgaon and on midnight calls with women in SanFransisco, Houston, London, Sydney.
Dr. Rebecca Dekker asked me to bring this to the Evidence Based Birth Podcast. EBB 402 is live.

In this episode: why ajwain and methi aren’t just tradition. What confinement actually does to your nervous system. Why the “don’t eat cold things” advice has more logic than your LC thinks. How to talk to your paediatrician about co-sleeping without being judged. What Indian mothers abroad need that no postpartum system currently provides.

Parenting is hard everywhere. But parenting 8,000 miles from your mother, in a system that doesn’t speak your language, while being told your instincts are wrong — that is a specific kind of hard. This episode was made for that mother.

Evidence Based Birth reaches millions of families globally. When they wanted to understand what Indian mothers experience — they called me. Because this conversation has been missing from the global maternal health space for too long.

If you have ever sat in that 2am silence wondering why nobody around you seems to get it — this episode was made for you. Link in bio to listen. Save this post to share with an Indian mother who needs it.
