Can AI understand the complexity of an Indian thali? Researchers at IIIT Hyderabad are showing that it can.
A team from the Centre for Visual Information Technology (CVIT) is developing AI-powered tools that can analyse Indian meals, estimate nutritional value, and even map the rich diversity of food cultures across the country. Their work tackles challenges unique to Indian cuisine, where dishes are often mixed, layered, and highly varied. Beyond nutrition tracking, the research aims to create an AI-powered food map of India, capturing regional culinary differences and preserving food knowledge for future generations.
A fascinating example of how AI can be applied to solve uniquely Indian problems while advancing research at the intersection of technology, health, and culture.
