Three Students Build Award-Winning Spider-Inspired Robot for Real-World Terrain Challenges

What happens when a robot reaches terrain where wheels fail?

Three students built a solution.

We are Devanarayanan A, Arjun Binoj, and Zanin P Zacharia, and we have developed a spider-inspired 24 DOF hexapod robot designed to move across rough, uneven, and challenging terrains with high flexibility and stability.

Unlike conventional wheeled robots that can get stuck on rocks, gaps, or irregular surfaces, our six-legged robot is capable of adapting its movement and walking through complex environments. The project is a working prototype of a larger vision focused on intelligent robotic systems for rescue missions, inspection, environmental analysis, and future AI-powered autonomous applications.

Our project was presented at the International Conference conducted at SRM University, where nearly 700 research papers from professors, researchers, M.Tech holders, PhD holders, and industry professionals were submitted and evaluated. Out of these, only 60 papers received the Best Paper Award, and our project was selected among them.

As second-year engineering students of KMEA Engineering College, this project was carried out under the guidance, support, and supervision of Assistant Professor Steve James from the Department of Robotics and Automation. We sincerely express our gratitude to Principal Dr. Amar Nishad T. M., Vice Principal Dr. Rekha Lakshmanan, Head of the Department Dr. Sangeetha C. P., AO Mrs. Veena K. Viswam, Visiting Professor Mr. Sunil Paul, and all the faculty members of the department for their continuous encouragement, valuable support, and guidance throughout the project. We also gratefully acknowledge the KMEA college management for funding and supporting this project initiative.
