Tranquility.
Avoid saying these 3 things in interviews.
[Interview Preparations, Interview Skills, Speak with Confidence, Jobs. Job Search, Business English, Corporate Leadership]
đ Save this for your next interview
Sometimes you realise very quickly that a role isnât the right fit for you.
That does NOT mean youâve failed.
And it doesnât automatically ruin your chances with recruiters either.
Yes, short stints can raise questions.
But in todayâs market, more companies understand that smart candidates make strategic career moves to grow faster.
The important part is how you communicate it.
â Donât say âmy manager is toxicâ
â Donât speak negatively about the company at all
Instead, you need to communicate two things clearly:
1ď¸âŁ You genuinely tried to make the role work internally
2ď¸âŁ Youâre moving towards a stronger opportunity, not just escaping a bad one
Hereâs an example of how to frame it:
âThere have been some internal changes that shifted the direction of my role, and it no longer aligns with where I want to take my career long term.
I explored a few internal paths first, but none felt like the right long-term fit.
When I came across this opportunity, it stood out because it allows me to use my strengths in (2-3 relevant skills), contribute quickly, and continue building commercially valuable experience.â
Then take back control of the conversation by asking:
âCan you walk me through what top performers in this role are doing differently?â
To summarise:
⢠Donât centre the conversation around why youâre leaving
⢠Focus on what youâre moving towards
⢠Talk about pull factors, not push factors
Iâve put together:
â A list of what NOT to say in interviews (the fastest ways to get rejected)
â A framework for turning your experience into high-scoring interview answers

Here are 3 specific sentences you should never say when asked this question:
⢠âTo be honest, everything you need to know about me is already on my CV.â
(Why it fails: It shuts down the conversation and makes you seem rigid or lacking in self-awareness.)
⢠âMy CV doesnât show that Iâm a total perfectionist who sometimes cares too much about the work.â
(Why it fails: It relies on a tired, clichĂŠd humble-brag that interviewers hear constantly and rarely believe.)
⢠âIt doesnât mention that Iâm looking for a role with better work-life balance than my last job.â
(Why it fails: It shifts the focus toward what you want to extract from the company rather than the value you bring to them.)
Focus on the âInvisible Work.â
Talk about the work you do that doesnât produce a âmetric.â
⢠How you mentor others.
⢠How you simplify complex problems.
⢠How you maintain focus under pressure.
This is the âconnective tissueâ of your career.â
Try this: âWhatâs not on my CV is my commitment to cognitive diversity. On every project, I make it a point to seek out the quietest person in the room. Iâve found that the best insights often come from those who process information differently, and Iâve made it a core part of my leadership style to ensure those perspectives are integrated into the final solution.â
A CV is a list of results. This answer is your process. Show them how you think, and youâll show them why youâre indispensable.
