The Seven Commandments:
Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
No animal shall wear clothes.
No animal shall sleep in a bed.
No animal shall drink alcohol.
No animal shall kill any other animal.
All animals are equal.

My latest column in The Week takes a look at the removal of Lutyens’ bust from the grounds of Rashtrapati Bhavan, now owned by Indians — of whom he had a very poor opinion (since he was, alas, a repulsive racist). But while shedding no tears for the bigot’s defenestration, I do ask whether all this political symbolism isn’t a poor substitute for the real work of construction and governance, which tends to be obscured in all the hoo-ha?
