HOW TO BUILD A CHARACTER AS AN ACTOR

A character is not created by changing your voice or adding a few mannerisms. It is built from the inside out.

Ask yourself:

• What does the character want more than anything?
• What are they afraid of losing?
• What happened in their past that shaped them?
• How do they see themselves?
• How do they want others to see them?
• What is their biggest wound?
• What secret are they carrying?

Once you know these answers, start living in the character’s world. Walk like them. Think like them. React like them. Speak their thoughts. Build their daily routine. Discover their relationships.

Don’t play the character.
Understand the character.

The deeper your understanding, the more truthful your performance becomes.

Every great performance begins long before the camera rolls or the curtain rises. It begins with the actor’s curiosity to explore another human being.

Why do we love watching Leonardo DiCaprio on screen?

Because he doesn’t just play a character.
He disappears into one.

Whether it’s Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street, Hugh Glass in The Revenant, Frank Abagnale in Catch Me If You Can, or Rick Dalton in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood — you don’t see Leonardo DiCaprio trying to act.

You see a human being living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.

That’s what great acting is.

Many actors focus on looking emotional.
Great actors focus on becoming the person.
