SGC Namchi Observes World Environment Day with Plantation Drive

Namchi, June 5: Sikkim Government College, Namchi, observed World Environment Day 2026 under the banner of its Nature Club/Eco Club, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. The club has consistently promoted environmental awareness among students while providing them with practical exposure to nature conservation initiatives.
In line with this year’s global theme, “Nature-Based Climate Solutions” the college organized a plantation drive involving students, faculty members, and staff. As a part of the initiative, every participant was encouraged to plant a sapling, emphasizing individual responsibility in protecting and restoring the environment.
The saplings for the plantation drive were generously provided by Mr. Tsheten Tashi Lepcha, DFO (T), Forest and Environment Department, Namchi. The institution’s NSS Unit facilitated the distribution of saplings among all 19 departments of the college, ensuring widespread participation in the activity.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Deepak Tiwari, Principal of SGC Namchi, highlighted the significance of observing World Environment Day through meaningful action. He stated that every student graduating from the institution should possess a strong sense of responsibility toward the long-term health and sustainability of the environment. He further emphasized the importance of organizing such initiatives regularly to instill environmental values among the youth.
The plantation drive witnessed enthusiastic participation from a large number of students and faculty members, who came together to champion the cause of environmental preservation. The event not only contributed to increasing green cover but also reinforced the college’s commitment to nurturing environmentally conscious citizens.
Through such initiatives, SGC Namchi continues to play an active role in promoting sustainable practices and encouraging collective action for a greener and healthier future.

Tribeny Rai Leads Shape of Momo Outreach at SGC Namchi

Namchi, June 2: A team from the critically acclaimed film Shape of Momo visited Sikkim Government College (SGC), Namchi, on Monday as part of the promotional campaign for the film, which was released in India last Friday. The team, led by writer-director Tribeny Rai and accompanied by members of the cast, interacted with students and faculty during a special session held on the college campus.
The event featured a screening of the film's trailer, offering the audience a glimpse into the story and themes explored in the movie. Students also had the opportunity to engage directly with the filmmaker and cast members, discussing the film's journey and significance.

Prior to its theatrical release, Shape of Momo had already earned widespread recognition on the international film festival circuit. The Nepali-language drama had its world premiere at the 30th Busan International Film Festival, where it won the prestigious Songwon Vision Award and the Taipei Film Commission Award. The film was subsequently screened at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain and the Kolkata International Film Festival, where it received the Golden Royal Bengal Tiger Award. Overall, the film has garnered more than 15 awards across major international festivals, bringing global attention to Sikkimese and Nepali-language cinema.

The film's successful festival run and critical acclaim generated significant interest among audiences and critics alike, ultimately paving the way for its theatrical release in India. Noted filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, Payal Kapadia, and Mike Goodridge served as executive producers of the project.

Addressing the gathering, Tribeny Rai shared that the inspiration behind Shape of Momo stemmed from a desire to bring visibility to the Nepali minority community, whose stories have rarely found representation in mainstream cinema. She emphasized that art and literature possess the power to transcend geographical and cultural boundaries, enabling communities to share their heritage with wider audiences. Rai also noted that evolving government support and media platforms have created greater opportunities for promoting local art and culture.

Cast member Shyama Shree Sherpa also addressed the students, highlighting the crucial role audiences play in the growth of a film industry. She remarked that meaningful cinema can flourish only when viewers actively choose to support and appreciate quality storytelling.

Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay Dipali Rai, Chairman of the Cultural Department and an alumnus of SGC Namchi, described Shape of Momo as a truly authentic Sikkimese film, created by a Sikkimese writer-director and featuring a predominantly Sikkimese cast. He noted that the film's selection and recognition at internationally acclaimed festivals such as Busan and San Sebastián were a matter of immense pride for the state.

He further encouraged the audience to watch the film, stating that it offers a thoughtful exploration of the expectations and pressures that women continue to face in contemporary society. He added that supporting local artists and filmmakers is essential for strengthening the region's cultural identity and creating opportunities for future generations of storytellers.

Monthly Gardening Activity by Students

29th May 2026: The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication conducted its monthly gardening activity with the second semester students. The activity aimed to encourage environmental awareness and responsibility among students.

During today’s session, the students actively participated in weeding and properly preserving the saplings of various plants and vegetables that have grown since the previous month. The students worked together to clean the garden area and ensure the healthy growth of the plants.

The department regularly organizes such activities to promote teamwork, sustainability, and care for nature among students.

SGC Namchi Students and Faculty Shine at Sikkim University Convocation

Namchi, May 28: Sikkim Government College (SGC), Namchi, achieved remarkable success at the Seventh Convocation of Sikkim University held on May 27, 2026, with several students securing Gold and Silver Medals while faculty members were awarded PhD degrees.

Students from the college received honours across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for securing the highest and second-highest absolute marks in their respective disciplines, as approved by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor on the recommendations of the Deans’ Committee.

Adding to the institution’s achievements, several Assistant Professors of SGC Namchi were also conferred PhD degrees during the convocation ceremony. The awardees included Dr Cherrila W. Bhutia and Dr Mahendra Prasad Gurung from the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Dr Santosh S***a and Dr Nabin Manger from the Department of Education, Dr Dewan Rai from the Department of Commerce, Dr Ananta Rai from the Department of Zoology and Dr Laden Sherpa from the department of Physics.

In the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) programme, Mr Riwaj Chettri secured the Gold Medal for 2023 along with the ICAI Medal of Merit, while Ms Akila Bhutia won the Gold Medal and ICAI Medal of Merit for 2024 under the combined ranking of all colleges and departments. Ms Ismiti S***a also secured the Gold Medal and ICAI Medal of Merit for 2025.
In Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Ms Dharmit Lepcha secured the Silver Medal for 2023 and Ms Sanila Rai received the Gold Medal for 2024. In Bachelor of Science (Honours), Mr Shahin Akhtari Ansari secured the Silver Medal for 2025.

Among postgraduate students, Ms Anuka Diyali Kami secured the Gold Medal in Master of Commerce for 2023 under the combined ranking of PG Extension and Department, while Ms Ishneha Rai received the Gold Medal for 2024.

In Master of Arts (Education), Gold Medals were awarded to Ms Nika Chettri (2023), Ms Monalisha Chhetri (2024), and Ms Karma Eden Bhutia (2025). In Master of Arts (Geography), Ms Meera Basnet secured the Gold Medal for 2024 and Ms Aita Maya Limboo for 2025.
Several other students from the college also received Silver Medals in their respective programmes and academic years, reflecting the institution’s consistent academic excellence.
Congratulating the students and faculty members, the Principal of Sikkim Government College Namchi said the achievements reflected the dedication, discipline, and hard work of both students and teachers and had brought immense pride to the institution.

The Principal further expressed hope that the success would inspire future students to strive for academic excellence and continue the tradition of achievement in higher education.

Teachers Triumph Again, Ending Fest on a High Note

Namchi, 21/05/26: After defeating the SRC members of 2025–26 in the football match, the teachers’ team once again showcased their sporting spirit and excellence by defeating the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) members in an exhibition volleyball match.

The exciting match was played in a thrilling three-set decider, where the teachers emerged victorious after a spirited performance against the young and agile college students. The event highlighted not only the competitive enthusiasm of the participants but also the remarkable sporting abilities and teamwork displayed by the teachers of Sikkim Government College Namchi.

The friendly encounter fostered camaraderie, sportsmanship, and mutual respect between the teachers and students, making the event an enjoyable and memorable occasion for everyone present. The thrilling match also marked a grand conclusion to the weeklong annual fest of the college, adding excitement and vibrancy to the closing celebrations and leaving the audience with unforgettable memories.
