Shramdaan – Learning Through Action

Today's Shramdaan by faculty, staff, and trainees focused on cleaning the area behind the STC and STC Hostel. It also marked the final Shramdaan activity for the present batch of 100 trainees.

Over the past several weeks, Shramdaan has been much more than a cleanliness drive. It has been a journey of character building, leadership development, and value-based learning. Through weekly interactions, trainees reflected on themes such as:

* Dignity of Labour
* First Step
* Consistency
* Ownership
* The Starfish Story
* One Loose Bolt
* Complacency
* Ignorance
* Job, Duty, Responsibility & Purpose
* I vs We
* Pride in Work
* Pressure vs Principles
* Innovation vs Invention
* Excellence vs Perfection
* Reactive vs Proactive

Today's interaction by the DG focused on Reactive vs Proactive , emphasizing that proactive individuals spend more time in their circle of influence, taking ownership of situations rather than merely reacting to circumstances.

Alongside cleanliness activities, trainees also undertook scrap segregation and Scrap to Utility initiatives. Their creativity and teamwork resulted in several innovative and useful items being created from discarded materials, demonstrating that value can be created when problems are viewed as opportunities.

The true success of Shramdaan lies not only in cleaner surroundings but also in nurturing responsible, proactive, innovative, and socially conscious professionals who understand that leadership begins with action.

When hands work together, minds learn together, and values grow together.

Following the Shramdaan activities, a practical demonstration session on the use of fire extinguishers was conducted for trainees to enhance fire safety awareness and emergency preparedness.

The session included hands-on training where trainees actively practiced operating fire extinguishers on controlled fires, gaining practical exposure and confidence in handling emergency situations effectively.

Such practical learning initiatives play an important role in building safety consciousness and preparedness among trainees.

Under the initiative and guidance of DG IRIEEN, the ongoing Shramdaan activities aimed at sustainability, innovation, and campus improvement continue to gather momentum. After weeks of brainstorming, scrap segregation, and preparatory activities, ideas are now gradually beginning to take shape on the ground.

Today’s Shramdaan focused on further segregation, cleaning, sorting, and painting of scrap materials to prepare them for their productive utilization in the coming weeks. Teams worked towards identifying and processing scrap items that will eventually be transformed into useful campus assets such as benches and other functional installations.

In parallel, roof whitening activities were also undertaken as a measure to mitigate soaring summer temperatures and improve thermal comfort across campus spaces.

The steady progress reflects how systematic effort, teamwork, and innovation can convert waste into valuable resources while simultaneously contributing towards a more sustainable, comfortable, and vibrant campus environment.

The enthusiastic participation of all teams reaffirmed our collective commitment towards sustainability, resource optimization, and continuous campus improvement.

Continuing the sustainability and innovation initiative launched during previous Shramdaan activities at IRIEEN, today’s efforts were focused on giving practical shape to the ideas developed for productive utilization of scrap materials.

Teams actively undertook activities such as cleaning, cutting, grinding, welding, and painting of scrap items for fabrication of useful structures and creative assets.

Efforts are underway to convert scrap into functional utilities including benches and other installations, demonstrating how innovation and teamwork can transform waste into valuable resources.

The enthusiastic participation of all teams reflected a strong commitment towards sustainability, creativity, and campus development.

Today’s Shramdaan was focused on scrap segregation as part of our ongoing sustainability and innovation initiative. Last Saturday, around 10 teams were formed to brainstorm and develop innovative ideas for creating useful and creative items from scrap materials. It was inspiring to see the teams come forward with wonderful and practical ideas.
Today’s activity concentrated on systematic segregation of scrap to facilitate these projects effectively.
Efforts are also underway to revive an old water fountain on the campus. Cracks had developed in the fountain bed, and during today’s Shramdaan, mastic compound was applied to arrest leakage and restore the structure.
During the interaction session, DG shared the inspiring short story of the “Elephant’s Rope,” highlighting the importance of breaking mental barriers and realizing our true potential. DG also administered the Environment Pledge to all present, reinforcing our collective commitment towards sustainability and environmental responsibility.

DG, IRIEEN inaugurated the Loco Lab at IRIEEN on 11.05.2026, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the institute’s technical training infrastructure. Developed to provide trainees and officers with practical exposure to modern locomotive systems, troubleshooting techniques, and maintenance practices, the lab will enhance hands-on learning and technical competency.

While inaugurating the facility, DG/IRIEEN emphasized the importance of technological upgradation, practical learning, and continuous skill enhancement to meet the evolving requirements of Indian Railways. The Loco Lab will serve as an important platform for improving operational efficiency, maintenance practices, and safety awareness among railway personnel.

IRIEEN reaffirmed its commitment to cleanliness, discipline, and continuous improvement through the weekly Shramdaan conducted today, led by the DG. Faculty members, trainees, and staff participated enthusiastically in cleanliness activities across the identified areas of the campus, reflecting the spirit of collective responsibility towards Swachhta.

Following the Shramdaan, an interaction was held with trainees on the theme Invention vs Innovation.The interaction highlighted that while invention refers to creating something entirely new, innovation lies in improving existing systems, processes, and practices to make them more effective, reliable, and useful. It was emphasized that in organizations like Indian Railways, even small practical improvements that enhance safety, efficiency, reliability, or work culture can become meaningful innovations.

Today’s Shramdaan was not just about cleaning the surroundings, but about revisiting and reinforcing our core values.We reflected on all the key themes covered so far by DG during interaction after every shramdaan:
Dignity of Labour, First Step, Consistency, Ownership, Starfish Story, One Loose Bolt, Complacency, Ignorance, Job–Duty–Responsibility–Purpose, I vs We, Pride in Work, and Pressure vs Principles.

The message of the day was clear:

- The first step initiates change
* Consistency builds habits
* Ownership brings life to work
* One loose bolt can lead to major consequences
* Complacency and ignorance are silent risks**
* Growth lies in moving from Job → Duty → Responsibility → Purpose
* “I” begins the effort, but “We” builds the culture
* Pride in work defines our identity
* Pressure is the true test of our principles

Let us carry these values beyond today and practice them every day.

“Character is doing the right thing even when no one is watching”.
