Quran : 3:103
"Wa'tasimu bihablillahi jamee'an wa la tafarraqu..."
(وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا)
"Aur Allah ki rassi ko sab mil kar mazbooti se thaam lo aur phoot (yaani tafarruqe) mein na pado."
Context & Meaning
This is one of the most frequently cited verses in the Quran regarding community and solidarity. It addresses a few foundational concepts:
The "Rope of Allah": Classical scholars (such as Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari) widely interpret the "rope" as the Quran itself or the religion of Islam. The command to "hold firmly" is a call to anchor the community's values and actions in this shared guidance rather than personal or tribal interests.
A Call Against Sectarianism: The explicit command to "not become divided" forms the theological basis against breaking into sects or allowing internal disputes to fracture the community.
Historical Context: The verse speaks directly to the situation in ancient Madinah. The two major tribes there, the Aws and the Khazraj, had fought bitter, generations-long wars before the arrival of Islam. The verse reminds them that their newfound peace and brotherhood as the Ansar (Helpers) was a direct divine favor that saved them from mutual destruction ("the edge of a pit of the Fire").
