If you start the “sell me this pen” question by talking, you’ve already lost it. 🖊️

I’ve sat on the hiring side of that table plenty of times. The candidates who nail this go quiet before they sell.

Before pitching anything, they ask:

🤔 “What do you use a pen for most — quick notes, signing documents, carrying one into meetings?”

👀 “Does it matter more how it feels in your hand, or how it looks when you hand it over?”

😤 “What’s annoyed you about pens you’ve bought before?”

Honestly, those few questions do all the heavy lifting:

🎯 The buyer basically hands you the exact reasons to sell to them

🧲 Your pitch now fits the person instead of being a lucky guess

🕹️ And without making a thing of it, you’re steering the whole conversation

That’s the real reason interviewers ask it. They want to see if you can read a person and work out what they need before you sell. Same skill that makes you good at the actual job.
