Sarala Birla Public School, Ranchi, inaugurated โCheckmate Championsโ, a State-Level Five-Day Residential Chess Camp scheduled from 23 to 27 June 2026, bringing together aspiring chess players, distinguished academicians and eminent personalities from the world of chess for an intensive learning and training experience. Designed to nurture strategic thinking, discipline and excellence in the royal game, the five-day residential camp provides a unique platform for young enthusiasts to learn from accomplished mentors and strengthen their analytical and decision-making skills.
The inaugural ceremony commenced with the welcoming and felicitation of the distinguished guests, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolising the pursuit of wisdom, knowledge and excellence. A melodious welcome song and a graceful Saraswati Vandana presented by the choir troupe added a cultural touch to the occasion and set an inspiring tone for the workshop.
The event witnessed the presence of Grandmaster Himanshu Sharma, the first Grandmaster from Haryana and an internationally acclaimed chess player, coach and FIDE Trainer. The Guest of Honour for the occasion was Prof. (Dr.) Gopal Pathak, Director General, Sarala Birla University. Other distinguished dignitaries present included Mr. Abhishek Das, FIDE Trainer and Assistant Coach; Prof. (Dr.) Jeganathan Chockalingam, Vice Chancellor, Sarala Birla University; Prof. S. B. Dandin, Registrar, Sarala Birla University; Mr. Mukherjee P., Knowledge Resource Curator and Mr. Manish Kumar, Honorary Secretary, All Jharkhand Chess Association and Joint Secretary, All India Chess Federation.
Addressing the gathering, Principal Ms. Manisha Sharma extended a warm welcome to the guests and participants. She highlighted the educational value of chess in fostering concentration, patience, critical thinking and sound decision-making. She remarked that chess is a game that initiated in India and is not merely a game but a powerful medium for intellectual growth, character development and lifelong learning.
In his address, the Guest of Honour, Prof. (Dr.) Gopal Pathak underscored the importance of developing strategic thinking and intellectual discipline among students. He observed that chess serves as an excellent educational tool that enhances logical reasoning, problem-solving abilities and resilience. He encouraged the participants to embrace challenges with confidence and to view every move on the chessboard as an opportunity to learn, analyse and grow.
Addressing the participants, the Grandmaster, Himanshu Sharma shared valuable insights from his illustrious journey in the world of chess. He inspired the young players to pursue excellence through dedication, perseverance and continuous practice, emphasising that success is achieved through disciplined effort, patience and the willingness to learn from both victories and setbacks. He encouraged the budding chess enthusiasts to make the most of the camp and cultivate a mindset that values learning as much as winning.
The camp was formally declared open in the presence of the distinguished guests, marking the commencement of five days of intensive training, mentorship and learning. Checkmate Champions promises to provide budding chess players with an invaluable opportunity to learn from a renowned Grandmaster.
