Router vs Switch is one of the most important concepts every network engineer should understand π
In this short video, we explain the difference between Router and Switch:
β
What is a Switch
β
What is a Router
β
Layer 2 vs Layer 3 device
β
MAC address vs IP address decision making
β
How switches forward frames
β
How routers forward packets
β
Real-world enterprise network use case
Switch = Connects devices inside the same network π
Router = Connects different networks together π
A strong networking foundation starts with understanding these core devices π

A few years ago, I was troubleshooting a large enterprise network where all routers were up, OSPF neighbors were stable, BGP sessions were established, and every engineer was saying:
β
OSPF is working
β
BGP is working
β
MPLS is working
But users were still unable to reach critical applications.
The problem was not OSPF.
The problem was not BGP.
The problem was that nobody understood how OSPF, BGP, VRF, MP-BGP, NAT, PAT, VPN, IPsec, Route Leaking, Internet Access, and Service Provider technologies work together in a real production environment.
This is exactly where many networking professionals get stuck.
Most engineers learn protocols individually:
β‘οΈ OSPF as a routing protocol
β‘οΈ BGP as an internet routing protocol
β‘οΈ NAT for address translation
β‘οΈ VPN for connectivity
But in real enterprise and service provider networks, nothing works in isolation.
You must understand:
πΉ How OSPF feeds routes into BGP
πΉ How MP-BGP carries VPN routes across MPLS networks
πΉ How VRFs isolate customers while sharing the same infrastructure
πΉ How Route Leaking provides Internet access to multiple customers
πΉ How NAT/PAT work with MPLS and VPN environments
πΉ How IPsec secures traffic over public networks
πΉ How Service Providers deliver VPN services to thousands of customers
This is the difference between:
β Someone who can configure commands
and
β
Someone who can troubleshoot real production networks.
That's why in our upcoming OSPF + BGP Live Course, we are not focusing on theory alone.
We are going to build and troubleshoot 100+ real-time labs covering:
π₯ OSPF Deep Dive
π₯ Advanced BGP
π₯ MP-BGP
π₯ MPLS L3VPN
π₯ VRF Technologies
π₯ Route Leaking
π₯ NAT & PAT
π₯ GRE & IPsec VPN
π₯ Enterprise & Service Provider Scenarios
π₯ Real Troubleshooting Cases
My goal is simple:
Not to make you memorize commands.
But to help you think like a Network Engineer who can solve real-world problems confidently.
Because in interviews, projects, and production environments, nobody asks:
"Do you know the OSPF command?"
They ask:
"Can you fix the network when everything looks normal but users still can't access applications?"
That is where true networking begins.

Have you heard about Intent-Based Networking (IBN)?
In traditional networking, engineers configure routers, switches, and firewalls manually, one device at a time.
With IBN, engineers simply define the business intent, such as:
β
Video traffic should get high priority
β
Guest users should access Internet only
β
Finance users should be isolated
The network automatically translates that intent into the required configurations and continuously verifies whether the network is achieving the desired outcome.
IBN helps organizations reduce human errors, improve security, save operational time, and automate network management.
This is one of the most important concepts in modern networking, automation, and AI-driven infrastructure.
