It was our honor to chair the Master’s thesis examination committee for the student Zainab Adnan Abdullah at the Department of Civil Engineering / College of Engineering / University of Anbar, for her thesis entitled:
“Seismic-Induced Pounding of Isolated Steel-Concrete Hybrid Buildings with Adjacent Structures”
The thesis addressed an important and contemporary topic in structural and earthquake engineering, focusing on seismic pounding between adjacent buildings, with particular emphasis on hybrid steel–concrete structures and the effectiveness of base isolation systems in improving structural performance and mitigating pounding effects under various earthquake excitations through nonlinear numerical analysis.
Throughout the discussion, the student demonstrated a distinguished academic level, clear research capability, and a sound understanding of the analytical and engineering aspects of the study, reflecting the considerable effort devoted to this work. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the supervisor, Prof. Dr. Akram Shaker Mahmoud, for his dedicated academic supervision and valuable scientific guidance throughout the research process.
We extend our gratitude and appreciation to the Deanship of the College of Engineering and the Headship of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Anbar for their kind invitation and confidence in assigning us to chair this scientific committee, reflecting the constructive academic cooperation and exchange of expertise between the University of Babylon and other Iraqi universities in support of scientific excellence and academic integrity.

One of the most challenging structural projects I’ve recently worked on involved the design and ex*****on of a non-conventional reinforced concrete structure that combines architectural complexity with structural precision.
The project is based on a hybrid grid system integrating both radial and orthogonal layouts, which introduced significant challenges in analysis, detailing, and ex*****on. It also features a double-curvature slab (bi-directional curvature) with cantilever spans ranging from 4.0 m to 6.8 m.
These cantilevered areas were executed as a box structural system, suspended from above using tension columns. This approach required strict control of deflections during construction. One of the key challenges was maintaining stable and fixed formwork throughout the casting and curing stages to ensure the intended geometry was achieved without distortion.
Projects of this nature clearly demonstrate that success depends not only on design, but on the integration of structural analysis, ex*****on detailing, and on-site expertise.

أحد التحديات الهندسية المميزة التي عملت عليها مؤخراً كان تصميم وتنفيذ هيكل خرساني غير اعتيادي يجمع بين التعقيد المعماري والدقة الإنشائية.
المشروع يعتمد على نظام محاور مختلط يجمع بين التخطيط الشعاعي والمستطيل، ما فرض تحديات واضحة في التحليل والتفصيل والتنفيذ. كما يتضمن فضاء رصيف ثنائي التقوس (Double Curvature Slab) مع فضاءات ناتئة (Cantilevers) يتراوح امتدادها بين 4.0 م إلى 6.8 م.
تم تنفيذ هذه الفضاءات على شكل هيكل صندوقي (Box System) مرفوع من الأعلى باستخدام أسلوب أعمدة الشد، وهو ما تطلب دقة عالية في السيطرة على التشوهات أثناء التنفيذ. أحد أبرز التحديات كان ضرورة إبقاء القالب الخشبي (Formwork) ثابتاً ومستقراً طوال فترة الصب والمعالجة لضمان تحقيق الشكل الهندسي المطلوب بدون انحرافات.
هذا النوع من المشاريع يوضح بجلاء أن النجاح لا يعتمد فقط على التصميم، بل على التكامل الحقيقي بين التحليل الإنشائي، تفاصيل التنفيذ، وخبرة الموقع.

Through Knowledge You Prevail, Not Through War and Destruction… Science and Culture Are the Path to Peace
While some arm themselves with weapons and colonial mindsets, betting on power to impose dominance, others build bridges through knowledge, dialogue, and human connection. These are the ones who believe that true peace is not forged in war rooms, but in scientific conferences, cultural forums, and friendships that transcend borders.

Throughout my journey, I have had the privilege of forming friendships with people from different corners of the world. We did not share the same language or culture, yet we were united by our common humanity: our love for knowledge, our desire to understand, and our belief that we are all part of one human family. From this experience, I learned that the foundation of any genuine human connection is mutual respect, and that no people or culture should be belittled—for every nation has its value, its history, and its own path that deserves recognition.

On the other side, there are those who stockpile arms and believe that peace can be imposed through force. They are the ones who see no value in mutual respect, and view other peoples as inferior or as subjects to be controlled. They sow hatred into the cultures of conflicting peoples, passing it down through generations. War is not merely a series of battles; it is a culture of destruction whose consequences linger for decades.

Have you not learned from history? Every human tragedy has been left behind by war, and we still suffer from its consequences to this day. Enough sowing division and strife among peoples, for you will never find peace in a land made desolate by war. The time has come to say: enough militarization, enough dominance through force. Through knowledge you prevail over the earth, not through war and destruction. Science, culture, and human connection are the only way to bring peoples together and pave the way for a lasting global peace—one built on mutual respect, on acknowledging the value of every people, and on refusing to belittle anyone, not on fear or control.

Peace is humanity in its purest form. War is the corruption of the world and the devastation of nations. Let us choose together: a culture of life, or the perpetuation of a culture of destruction.
بالعلم تسيطرون على الأرض لا بالحروب والخراب… العلم والثقافة طريقهما إلى السلام
بينما يتسلح البعض بالصواريخ والأفكار الاستعمارية، ويراهنون على القوة لفرض الهيمنة، يبني آخرون جسورًا من الكلمة والمعرفة واللقاءات الإنسانية. هؤلاء هم الذين يؤمنون بأن السلام الحقيقي لا يُصنع في غرف العمليات العسكرية، بل في المؤتمرات العلمية، والمنتديات الثقافية، والصداقات التي تمتد عبر الحدود.
خلال مسيرتي، جمعتني صداقات مع أناس من مختلف دول العالم. لم تكن لغتنا واحدة، ولا ثقافاتنا متماثلة، لكن القواسم الإنسانية جمعتنا: حب المعرفة، الرغبة في الفهم، والإيمان بأننا نشترك في إنسانية واحدة قبل أي انتماء آخر. وقد تعلمت من هذه التجربة أن أساس أي علاقة إنسانية حقيقية هو الاحترام المتبادل، وأن لا استصغار لأي شعب أو ثقافة، فلكل شعب قيمته وتاريخه ومسيرته التي تستحق التقدير.

في الطرف المقابل، ثمة من يكتنزون الترسانات العسكرية، ويظنون أن السلام يُفرض بمنطق القوة. هم الذين لا يعرفون للاحترام المتبادل قيمة، ولا يرون في الشعوب الأخرى إلا من ينبغي استصغارهم أو السيطرة عليهم. يزرعون الحقد في ثقافة الشعوب المتنازعة، ويورثونه جيلًا بعد جيل. الحرب ليست مجرد معارك، بل هي ثقافة دمار تمتد آثارها لعقود.

ألم تأخذوا العبرة من التاريخ؟ فكل المآسي الإنسانية خلفتها الحروب، وما زلنا نعاني من تبعتها إلى الآن. كفاكم زرع التفرقة والتناحر بين الشعوب، فأنتم لن تنعموا في أرض استحلت بالحروب. لقد آن الأوان لنقول: كفى تسلحًا، وكفى تعاملًا بمنطق القوة. بالعلم تسيطرون على الأرض لا بالحروب والخراب، فالعلم والثقافة والنشاطات الإنسانية هي السبيل الوحيد لجمع الشعوب، وتمهيد الطريق لسلام عالمي قائم على الاحترام المتبادل، والاعتراف بقيمة كل شعب، وعدم استصغار أحد، لا على الخوف والهيمنة.

السلام هو الإنسانية في أسمى صورها. والحرب هي فساد العالم وتدمير الشعوب. فلنختر معًا: إما ثقافة الحياة، أو استمرار ثقافة الموت.
