-Establishing new teaching programmes and facilitating enrichment of existing university programmes while respecting cultural diversity.

Cities, particularly in the developing countries, face real challenges in responding to a growing urban population. Provision of infrastructure and services such as housing, food, water, energy, transportation cannot keep up with the rising demands. Consequently, rapid urbanization and the formation of megacities mainly in developing world exacerbate urban environmental problems. Noteworthy, global as well as the local and regional changes including climate change, land use and land cover change, among others, compound these problems.
Dealing with these problems requires a system approach integrating population, ecosystems, land use and water planning and management, culture and economy is needed in setting environmental and social policies and development strategies based on key facts and concepts including sustainability and resiliency.
In response to these needs, UNESCO Chair in Water and Environment Management for Sustainable Cities stablished in 2012 at the Sharif University of Technology (Islamic Republic of Iran
