The most challenging aspect of the internal arts is perhaps accepting their inherently layered nature. The internal dynamics—countless in number—must be absorbed, refined, and harmonized with one another. Over time, every gesture should arise from a deep movement that naturally guides and shapes the surface. The path unfolds through learning, understanding, and ultimately realization, which coincides with letting go.

🌟 Han Xiong Ba Bei 含胸拔背
“Contain the chest and extend the back”

Together with Xu Ling Ding Jin and Ti Gang Suo Wei, Han Xiong Ba Bei forms one of the Three Spinal Harmonies. These are not merely postural rules but true internal codes—keys that align body and mind while supporting the smooth flow of neural signals and breath along the central axis. It is an ancient principle, yet alive: a bridge between structure and breath, stability and movement, strength and lightness.

⚖️ The Dynamic Function
A common misconception is that “containing the chest” implies holding or contracting. In reality, the intention is the opposite. The front of the chest should gently release into gravity, easing tension in the diaphragm, while the back rises and expands, as if lifted by a subtle upward force. Everything is supported by a lateral expansion that travels through the shoulders, enhancing the internal connection between the upper limbs and the central axis.
One image I often use is that of an old pulley: one end of the rope descends (the movement of the solar plexus), and as a natural consequence, the other end rises (the movement of the back).

It is essential to keep this dynamic happening internally, without altering the structure of the lumbar region, which is primarily regulated by Ti Gang Suo Wei.
Keeping this internal mechanism alive throughout the day helps improve kinesiological efficiency, enhance focus, support better breathing, and bring greater awareness into every moment.

The qualities developed through correct internal cultivation are not meant to be added onto other incomplete methods or exercises—they are meant to be integrated directly into daily life.

The direction of internal alchemy is to become the spontaneous manifestation of the principles.

There is a principle of the internal arts that, over the years, I have seen create more misunderstanding than clarity, and yet, when it is truly understood and practiced, it can lead to profound transformation: Ti Gang Suo Wei (提肛缩尾).

It is the third of the three fundamental principles related to spinal alignment and the free circulation of energy throughout the body. It concerns an area that is both extremely delicate and absolutely central: the sacral and perineal region.

Literally, the expression means “to lift the a**s and draw in the tail.” Ti (提) means to lift, Gang (肛) refers to the re**al area, Suo (缩) indicates drawing in or gathering, and Wei (尾) means “tail,” here referring to the coccyx (尾骨).
Read this way, it can sound mechanical or even forced, but in reality, the meaning is exactly the opposite.

One of the most important points to clarify is that Ti Gang Suo Wei is not a voluntary contraction. It is not “squeezing,” not “holding,” not a muscular action imposed from above. On the contrary, it arises from a deep release.

When the lumbar and pelvic musculature truly lets go under the effect of gravity, the pelvis naturally settles. The abdomen gently draws in, the lumbar curve softens without effort, and something reorganizes itself spontaneously. In this state, the Hui Yin point (in the perineum) aligns with Bai Hui (at the crown of the head), creating a genuine internal vertical connection. Over time, this release allows a natural sensation of upward lift in the perineal area to emerge without any forcing.

From the perspective of Internal Alchemy (Nei Gong), this principle is essential. It defines and “seals” the lower Dan Tian, together with the points Shen Que (the navel) and Ming Men (near the second lumbar vertebra). This is where a fundamental reorganization takes place, and from here the movement of the internal arts is born.

On a subtler level, Ti Gang Suo Wei organizes the pelvic diaphragm, allowing it to work in synergy with the thoracic diaphragm. This creates a kind of internal pneumatic sphere: the compression and expansion of this sphere are at the root of the explosive power and speed typical of the internal arts. Not by chance, this principle also acts on the first of the Three Gates (San Guan), facilitating the ascent of Qi along the spine and the Small Heavenly Circulation.

But none of this remains abstract. In real, embodied movement, Ti Gang Suo Wei radically changes how we use force.

Together with Xu Ling Ding Jin and Han Xiong Ba Bei, it creates an elastic extension of the spine, allowing great power to be generated with minimal energy expenditure. In Zhan Zhuang and Shi Li, it ensures that the body remains unified, enabling the force of the Dan Tian to reach the extremities without dispersion. In dynamic work such as Mo Ca Bu or Gong Bu this alignment allows us to stay rooted and stable even as the center of gravity shifts.

With consistent practice, something even more interesting happens: the nervous system is re-educated. It learns to favor release over contraction, continuity over effort, internal pressure over brute force. Old motor patterns give way to a way of moving that is more fluid, efficient, and coherent.

Ti Gang Suo Wei is one of those principles that marks a true turning point:
When you force it, it doesn’t work.
When you allow it to emerge, everything changes.
