The traditional “take–make–waste” model of resource management is no longer sustainable. Minerals are extracted, used in products, and discarded at the end of their life cycle, leading to depleted natural resources and growing waste.

To achieve Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12), we must shift toward a circular raw materials management system.

This approach relies on both primary and secondary raw materials. While primary mining will still be needed, the priority is to maximize the use of secondary materials by keeping metals and minerals in circulation through repair, reuse, and high-quality recycling. Doing so reduces reliance on virgin resources and minimizes the environmental impact of new mining activities.
