Throughout this challenge, each one of you has exemplified the spirit of curiosity and the commitment to fostering inclusion in leadership. Have you ever had a boss or manager who apologized to you when they were wrong?
We see it in African tradition where persons who hold high offices are put on a pedestal and therefore should not be questioned or allowed to make mistakes. Vulnerability is where the leader is seen for their humanity.
Brene Brown speaks often about vulnerability and the strengths it brings out, how it improves our relationships.
In "Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts." she Explores the importance of vulnerability and courage in leadership, emphasizing inclusive leadership styles.
What is your inclusive leadership style? Have you seen it improve not just how you understand your team but also influence their work output?

"Flying Without a Net" Turn Fear of Change into Fuel for Success by Thomas J. DeLong is a book that was recommended to me by Anne Kabugi after she attended the Women in leadership Program at Harvard. One chapter that got my attention is titled ‘Ask Someone to Dance”.
Whether we are adolescents trying to gather courage to ask for a dance or driven professionals trying to take on a fresh challenge, we need to overcome our anxiety, gather our courage and allow ourselves to be vulnerable so that we can grow.
The older we become, the more difficult it is to try something new; we settle for comfortable routines.
In essence, asking someone to dance embodies the principles of trust, respect, and inclusivity that are central to the theme of inspiring inclusion. It's a simple yet meaningful act that can foster connections, break down barriers, and create moments of joy and camaraderie within a community.
How will you move from your comfort zone and find time to ask for a dance?

If you have listened to our Activate Gems & Nuggets Podcast, and many stories from women leaders, we see moments where a huge life struggle makes them question the path chosen or allows enlightenment.
Written on the back of grieving her late husband, "Option B" by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant delves into the theme of resilience and finding strength in the face of adversity.
The book encourages readers to approach life's challenges with resilience, empathy, and a commitment to building inclusive communities where everyone feels valued and supported. Through empathy and understanding, we can inspire inclusion and create spaces where everyone can thrive, even in the face of adversity.
How do you face adversity, build resilience and find joy?

The battle against bias needs all hands on deck. You see, we all create biases based on our backgrounds and how we believe the world should be or is. Then we have a collective mentality on what the good girl is, and how the gracious lady should behave, where women perform best. Like nature, we resist vacuums and like our lines straight and pictures coloured within the border. But how do we deal with the ones who think differently? It took a few good women to go against the grain and show what more a woman could do.
"Rebel Talent" by Francesca Gino explores the power of non-conformity and authenticity in driving innovation and success. Gino emphasizes the importance of embracing diverse perspectives and encouraging individuals to express their unique identities and ideas.
By creating an environment where people feel empowered to be themselves and contribute their insights without fear of judgment, organizations can foster a culture of inclusivity. "Rebel Talent" underscores the value of listening to unconventional voices and considering alternative viewpoints.
Do you actively seek out diverse opinions and experiences?

"Leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room, but about empowering others to find and raise their own voices. Inclusion is the cornerstone of effective leadership, where every individual's unique perspective is valued, respected, and embraced." - Julia Gillard
Women and Leadership by Julia Gillard and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala explores gender bias and asks why there aren’t more women in leadership roles based on conversations with some of the world’s powerful women.
At Activate WILA, we talk about sending the lift back down, we encourage not just getting a seat at the table but also building bigger tables for more women. As we get ready for this year’s Women’s Day celebrations, let’s take stock of the voices raised.
How do you empower others to find and raise their own voices?
