How to Use “Shikamoo” and “Marahaba”
In Swahili culture, “Shikamoo” is a polite and respectful greeting used by younger people when greeting elders.
Long ago, when saying shikamoo, a young person would bend slightly or touch the elder’s feet as a sign of deep respect and humility. Today, people usually just say the word without touching the feet, but the meaning remains the same — “I honour you.”
The elder responds with “Marahaba,” meaning “I accept your respect” or “Thank you.”
🗣️ Example:
Child: Shikamoo, Babu! (I greet you, Grandpa!)
Grandpa: Marahaba, mjukuu wangu! (Thank you, my grandchild!)
This greeting reminds us to value respect, kindness, and good manners toward our elders.
Countries That Speak Kiswahili
Kiswahili, also known as Swahili, is one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa. It is a unifying language that connects people from different countries in East and Central Africa. Kiswahili is used for communication, trade, education, and even as an official language in some nations.
The main countries where Kiswahili is spoken include Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Comoros, and Somalia. It is also spoken in parts of Zambia, Malawi, and northern Madagascar.
Among these countries, Tanzania and Kenya use Kiswahili as an official language. In Tanzania, it is the national language and is used in schools, government offices, and daily communication. In Kenya, Kiswahili is one of the two official languages alongside English.
Kiswahili is a beautiful language that continues to grow in popularity across Africa and around the world. It brings people together and promotes unity, peace, and cultural exchange.
