The nation has been thrown into mourning following a devastating fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, which claimed the lives of 16 students.

According to officials, a fire broke out at around 12:45 a.m. in a dormitory located on the second floor of the school. At the time of the incident, the school had a student population of 808.

Emergency response teams, including the county security team, ASTU, KDF, and the Nakuru County Fire Brigade, worked together to contain the fire by 3:00 a.m.

A total of 79 students were injured during the incident and rushed to hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that 71 students have since been discharged, while 7 remain admitted in stable condition. One student was picked up by a parent.

Identification of the deceased is currently ongoing with support from the Ministry of Health and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Investigations have also been launched to determine the cause of the fire.

Parents and guardians who arrived at the school have been allowed to take their children home, while a support desk has been set up at the institution. Authorities have also provided the hotline number 1199 for information and assistance.

A multi-agency crisis response team remains at the scene, bringing together officers from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the County Government of Nakuru, and the Kenya Red Cross.

Authorities say they will continue providing updates as more information becomes available.
