The Department of Biological and Life Sciences in partnership with Phage Hunters Training and Research Program (PHDRP), conducted a 4-day groundbreaking training on bacteriophage research.
The training brought together participants from diverse institutions for hands-on learning and collaboration.
Bacteriophages (phages) are natural viruses that target and destroy bacteria, offering a promising complementary approach to antibiotics in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Participants first underwent weeks of virtual theoretical training, followed by practical fieldwork and laboratory sessions involving sample collection, phage isolation, and testing the phages against bacteria.
This is the first time the university has delivered both the theoretical and practical components of the training within its own facilities, demonstrating our growing capacity in conducting advanced scientific research and training.
Ultimately through this initiative the university seeks to carry out more research, inform policy, and have phage therapy as a mode of treatment in Kenya and Africa

Parents and sponsors too deserve appreciation. Without your support, our graduates may not have started and completed their academic programmes. Few people really get to understand and appreciate what it takes for one to deny and sacrifice their resources for children and generally students to go to college. Thank you, parents and sponsors! You are the unsung heroes who work behind the scenes to make things happen.

The first cohort under the Competence-Based Education (CBE) arrives in 2029. This transition demands urgency and preparedness. I am confident that The Management of the university guided by the Council is collaborating to do everything necessary to lay the foundation for a successful transition.
I also urge the Commission for University Education to intensify its oversight role and ensure that universities are ready for the transition and are implementing education reforms.
