One of the keys to personal leadership is using stoic principles for managing a strong emotional response.

When you feel angry or hurt, ask yourself this question, ā€œIs this up to me or not up to me?ā€ If not, you then choose to let go of any related inner-narrative and decide to move your thoughts onto something else.

My online seminar on 27 June at the NLP Conference, covers applications of Stoicism. A core principle is acceptance. You accept what happens (regardless if you like it or not). By accepting things that are not within your control, such as other people’s behaviour, you have adjusted your attitude and can then focus on simply managing your emotions, rather than continue to heat them up with on-going thoughts.

That does not mean being passive or fatalistic, in fact quite the opposite. The Roman emperor Marcus Arielleus was one of the most famous stoics and he hugely expanded the Roman Empire. He didn’t allow other people’s shortcomings to annoy him. He was able to put his emotions in check and gained a reputation of one of history’s greatest strategists.

This video comes from our Advanced Coaching course (that runs again this Wednesday). It features a brief demo of the Drama Triangle – how people feel like victims when they are upset and how they then react.

They may feel powerless (Victim); have a sense of righteous anger and want to get even (Persecutor) or may hope someone will save them or they may need to save someone else (Rescuer). There are numerous variations to this very personal ā€˜story’, often played out in workplaces and families. Sadly, it is mostly replayed within people’s heads.

The Advanced Coaching course, 6-8 May, live in London and hybrid Zoom, brings together NLP and Transactional Analysis to deliver strategies to resolve drama triangle and its origins. Book and more details on events page of www.nlpschool.com or link in bio

It can be useful to look at personal development through the lens of Archetypes—universal patterns of behaviour often reflected in mythological figures.

Why?

Because Archetypes capture both our inherent strengths and our potential blind spots, or shadows, offering a structured way to understand our own and others behaviour.

Using Archetypes as a reference point shows the importance of recognising one’s natural tendencies whilst highlighting less intuitive skills.

The underlying message is that growth comes not just from leaning into strengths, but from building competence in areas that feel less natural, leading to a more balanced and adaptable approach to life.

We cover all this and much more on our 3 day Advanced NLP Coaching course next week. 6-8 May.

A key theory in Transactional Analysis is that we are all unconsciously running a script or story about ourselves that we somehow created in our early life.

Some scripts are helpful, some not so much.

Can you relate to any of the following?

• Work Harder
• Be Perfect
• Hurry Up
• Try Harder
• Be Strong
• Please People
• Be Careful

Becoming aware of our scripts means that we can respond to them, rather than reacting to them.

This awareness can then give us more freedom to make conscious and meaningful choices about how to live.

If you are interested in learning more about Transactional Analysis, Life Scripts, Archetypes and NLP then take a look at our upcoming 3 day Advanced Coaching course.
