One of the keys to personal leadership is using stoic principles for managing a strong emotional response.
When you feel angry or hurt, ask yourself this question, āIs this up to me or not up to me?ā If not, you then choose to let go of any related inner-narrative and decide to move your thoughts onto something else.
My online seminar on 27 June at the NLP Conference, covers applications of Stoicism. A core principle is acceptance. You accept what happens (regardless if you like it or not). By accepting things that are not within your control, such as other peopleās behaviour, you have adjusted your attitude and can then focus on simply managing your emotions, rather than continue to heat them up with on-going thoughts.
That does not mean being passive or fatalistic, in fact quite the opposite. The Roman emperor Marcus Arielleus was one of the most famous stoics and he hugely expanded the Roman Empire. He didnāt allow other peopleās shortcomings to annoy him. He was able to put his emotions in check and gained a reputation of one of historyās greatest strategists.
