On June 16, AMCHAM Korea’s Legal Affairs and ICT & AI Committees held a meeting on Korea’s AI Basic Act and what companies should prioritize during the one-year grace period before full implementation.
The program featured insights from Yeajin (Jinny) Suh of McKinsey & Company, Maria Hajiyerou of Kim & Chang, Christopher Mandel of Yulchon LLC, and Yunsoo Shin of Peter & Kim, who explored key topics including the AI Basic Act, transparency obligations and domestic agent requirements, AI-related HR considerations, and emerging liability risks. The session also featured an engaging panel discussion with the presenters and Kumsun Kim of Microsoft Korea on AI governance, regulatory uncertainty, and potential amendments to the AI Basic Act. Participants also received an AI Basic Act Readiness Checklist designed to help organizations assess preparedness and identify key compliance priorities.

On June 11, AMCHAM Korea hosted an exclusive Trade & Customs Committee Meeting with Sung Hyun ("Sung") Ha, Executive Director of the Office of International Affairs at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Co-hosted with Kim & Chang and led by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, the event brought together key stakeholders to discuss CBP’s regional priorities: securing trade and facilitating travel through enhanced information sharing and partner capacity.
The discussion delved into deepening collaboration with Korean partners, including the Korea Customs Service (KCS), Korea Immigration Service (KIS), Korean National Police Agency, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), and the importance of trusted frameworks such as the KORUS FTA, C-TPAT & KCS’s AEO Mutual Recognition Arrangements, and the Global Entry Program. Executive Director Ha also shared CBP’s operational advancements, including a new automated tool within ACE for IEEPA refunds and the recent launch of the CAPE process first phase on April 20, 2026.

Last Friday, AMCHAM Korea hosted a Taxation Committee Meeting at the offices of Bae, Kim & Lee (BKL) featuring Professor Robert Danon from the University of Lausanne & Danon Law. He broke down the OECD’s newly released 2026 Manual on Effective Mutual Agreement Procedures (MEMAP), which serves as a crucial roadmap to help governments and companies resolve cross-border tax conflicts more quickly and efficiently.
Jeremy Everett, Managing Director, Tax at Alvarez & Marsal Korea and AMCHAM Taxation Committee Co-Chair, also moderated a dynamic panel with leading experts Dr. Kyung-Geun Lee, Senior Advisor at BKL & former Ministry of Finance and Economy official, Joon-Kyoo Yang, Managing Director, Transfer Pricing at PwC Korea, and Steve Minhoo Kim, Senior Foreign Attorney/Tax Partner at Lee & Ko. The panel provided forward-looking strategies on how companies can protect themselves from future tax risks and what trends to watch out for.
