The Pandemic Agreement represents a significant milestone in strengthening global collaboration for future health emergencies. As countries work to advance shared approaches to prevention, preparedness, and response, cooperation and equitable access remain central to building a safer and more resilient future.

Because in an interconnected world, health security is only as strong as our collective ability to prepare for and respond to future threats.

๐Ÿ”™ Back to February 2026, when the GHAIN MENA team participated in the AI4D Strategic Communications Writeshop in Dakar, Senegal.

As the sole regional hub advancing responsible AI for global health in the MENA region, GHAIN MENA joined communication professionals from across the AI for Development (AI4D) Network for a five-day intensive writeshop facilitated by Niyel and supported through the IDRCโ€“FCDO partnership.

๐Ÿ“ The writeshop provided a hands-on environment focused on strategic storytelling, audience-centered communication, and multimedia content production. Participants refined high-impact stories from their projects, developed integrated communication outputs, and strengthened collaboration across diverse country contexts.

๐ŸŒ Through initiatives like these, GHAIN MENA continues to enhance its capacity to communicate the impact of responsible AI and digital health innovations across the region and beyond.

๐Ÿ’ป Virtual Panel: Climate, Health, and Migration in MENA

As part of the ongoing webinar series jointly organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Global Health Institute at the American University of Beirut, this virtual panel explored the complex intersections of conflict, climate change, health, and human mobility across the MENA region.

Bringing together experts from international organizations, academia, and country offices, the discussion examined how conflict intensifies climate-related stressors, exacerbates health risks, weakens adaptation capacities, and contributes to displacement and migration. Speakers shared field-based insights and country experiences, highlighting the long-term implications of these overlapping challenges on vulnerable populations and health systems.

What can this Ebola outbreak teach us about preparedness? ๐Ÿฆ

This outbreak highlights how multiple challenges can complicate response efforts from the absence of approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo strain, to misinformation and distrust, population movement across borders, and fragile health systems operating in complex contexts ๐ŸŒ

These realities reinforce a clear and urgent message: preparedness must not be delayed until emergencies occur.

Sustained investment in surveillance systems, stronger coordination and governance, and a well-trained public health workforce are essential to ensure timely detection, effective response, and stronger protection against future health threats.

Today, the Global Health Institute at the American University of Beirut officially launched the Global Health Diplomacy and Security Program (GHDP), a new program dedicated to advancing research, dialogue, and capacity strengthening at the intersection of health, diplomacy, and security.

Bringing together policymakers, diplomats, researchers and health professionals, the event highlighted the growing importance of evidence-informed policymaking, science-based diplomacy, and cross-sector collaboration in addressing today's complex global health challenges. Discussions underscored the need to strengthen the role of the Global South in shaping global health governance and to bridge the gap between evidence, policy, and action.

As health challenges continue to transcend borders, GHDP aims to serve as a hub for advancing cooperation, generating policy-relevant research, and strengthening the region's capacity to actively engage in global health diplomacy and security.

๐Ÿ“ข New Publication Alert

The Conflict Medicine Program (CMP) has published a new paper examining the growing gap between contemporary surgical training and the demands of humanitarian and conflict settings.

As surgical practice becomes increasingly specialized, fewer surgeons are equipped with the broad competencies required for austere environments.

The paper proposes the establishment of an International Humanitarian Surgery Training & Accreditation Board (IHSTAB); a structured, competency-based framework to support preparedness, standardization, and sustained capacity in humanitarian surgery.

๐Ÿค๐Ÿป Strengthening the surgical workforce in conflict settings requires aligning training with reality.
