Minister of National Defense Reaffirms Importance of National Unity for Sustainable Peace and Democratic Governance.
Barclay Training Center, Monrovia, Liberia (May 12, 2026): The Minister of National Defense, Geraldine Janet George, has reaffirmed the critical importance of national unity in sustaining peace, stability, and democratic governance in Liberia.
Speaking at the 62nd National Unification Day Dialogue held at the University of Liberia Capitol Hill Campus under the theme, “Assessing the Impact of President and Legislative Elections on Peace, National Unification, Reconciliation and Governance,” Minister George emphasized that lasting national security must be grounded in justice, inclusion, dialogue, reconciliation, and accountable governance.
The Defense Minister called on all Liberians to continue promoting trust-building, responsible leadership, peaceful coexistence, constitutional governance, and national reconciliation as essential pillars for national development and stability.
Minister George further assured citizens that the Armed Forces of Liberia remains fully committed to protecting Liberia’s sovereignty while fostering peace, unity, and security across the country.
Observed annually on May 14, National Unification Day was established in 1960 by former Liberian President William V. S. Tubman under the “Unification Policy” to promote national integration and bridge historical divisions among Liberians.
The observance continues to serve as a reminder of the importance of unity, reconciliation, and inclusive nation-building in advancing sustainable peace and stability in Liberia.
