The Government Schools Supervisor Mrs. ‘Mathapelo Mohale explained the importance of licensing within the teaching profession, noting that it is a critical mechanism for maintaining professional standards, accountability, and quality education. She emphasized that the issue of licensing should not create any confusion among stakeholders, as the Teaching Council, once established, will be the sole body mandated to oversee and finalize all licensing processes and agreements for teachers.

She further stated that the licensing system will help ensure that only qualified and competent professionals are authorized to practice, thereby strengthening the integrity and credibility of the teaching profession in Lesotho.

The Ministry of Education and Training is working diligently to improve the teaching profession in Lesotho as part of its commitment to enhancing the quality of education and promoting better teaching and learning outcomes. To support these efforts, the Ministry has received technical assistance from the Regional Teacher Initiative for Africa (RTIA), which is providing support for the ongoing reforms in the teaching profession.

Officiating at a meeting convened to deliberate on critical matters relating to the implementation of the Teaching Council’s mandate, the Principal Secretary, Mr. Rats’iu Majara, reiterated the important role teachers play in national development. He emphasized that teachers are instrumental in shaping and developing the future leaders of the country and therefore deserve continued support and professional development.

Mr. Majara noted that strengthening the teaching profession is essential for improving educational standards and ensuring that learners receive quality instruction that will equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the country’s growth and development.

The Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Training Mr Rats’iu Majara officially opened a one-day Education Sector analysis validation meeting in preparation for the Education Sector Plan 2026–2036.
In his remarks, he urged all participants to actively contribute to the review process and ensure that the analysis effectively responds to the educational and developmental needs of the country over the next decade. He emphasized the importance of developing a comprehensive, inclusive, and forward-looking strategy that will guide the transformation of the education sector and support national development goals.
The validation meeting brings together key stakeholders to review, refine, and strengthen the draft plan before its final adoption.
