The last texts added to the Canon and the Paracanonical works
The sources used by Buddhaghosa preserved traditions which indicate that the inclusion of three texts in the list of canonical works was not accepted by all at an earlier date. This means that we cannot be sure that these works are as old as the period of the first writing down of the Canon.
The three works in question are the Cariyā-piṭaka, the Buddhavaṃsa and the Apadāna. I therefore discuss them here, together with three texts which may be of similar date: Milindapañha, Peṭakopadesa and Nettipakaraṇa.
