Lesson 12 Group Discussion Highlights

This week's discussion focused on one important question:
πŸ’¬ What kind of fuel are you putting into your tank?

Players talked about:
πŸ₯¦ How healthy foods help them play better
πŸ’§ The importance of staying hydrated
⚽ How nutrition affects performance on the field
🚭 How alcohol and ma*****na reduce endurance, slow reaction time, weaken muscles, and make it harder to perform at their best.

Through training, players experienced firsthand how energy, focus, and effort all work together to help them succeed.

The Play Smart, Live Strong initiative by the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association empowers our youth to make healthy choices on and off the field. Together with the Saipan Soccer School After School Program, we are using the power of soccer to promote substance-free lifestyles and reduce the risk factors related to underage drinking and ma*****na use.

Every week we will share about our practical lessons, group discussion highlights, and soccer skills we learned to support our players as they Play Smart, Live Strong!

Lesson 12: Fuel Your Game

Food is our fuel. Fuel powers our performance!

This week, our players learned that what we put into our bodies affects how we perform on the field.

Before training, we talked about endurance. Our ability to keep running, competing, and giving our best effort from the first whistle to the final minute.

Just like a car needs the right fuel to run, athletes need the right fuel to play their best.

Players explored how healthy foods help provide energy, strengthen muscles, improve recovery, and keep the brain focused during games. We also discussed how alcohol, ma*****na, and other harmful substances can negatively affect athletic performance by reducing energy, slowing reaction time, and making it harder for the body to perform.

On the field, players put their endurance to the test through a fun drill that challenged them to run, stay sharp, and execute a advanced footwork.

Lesson 12 Skill of the Week: Endurance

Great players don’t just start strong, they finish strong!

This week, players worked on endurance through a fun drill that challenged them to run, stay sharp, and execute a advanced footwork. We learned that endurance is about maintaining our energy, concentration, and effort from beginning to end.

We connected this skill to healthy fueling habits by teaching players that our bodies need the right fuel in order to perform our best!

We need healthy food to help us recover, stay sharp, and keep our energies high. Poor fuel like alcohol and ma*****na, can slow us down and keep us from reaching our full potential.

Lesson 11 Group Discussion Highlights

πŸ’¬ The situation changed. What do you do next?

This week's lesson focused on transition movement β€” both in soccer and in life.

Our players talked about:
⚽ Recognizing when a situation is becoming risky
⚽ Why walking away can be a smart and confident choice
⚽ Who their trusted teammates are
⚽ How friends, parents, teachers, and coaches can help them stay safe

On the field, players practiced reacting quickly, changing direction, finding open space, and supporting teammates during transitions.

Off the field, they learned that when a situation no longer supports their goals, they have the power to walk away, move to a safer place, and seek support.

Lesson 11 Skill of the Week: Transition

The game can change in an instant!

One moment your team has the ball. The next, you need to react, reposition, and find the best place to help your team succeed.

This week, players worked on transition movement by reacting quickly, finding open space, supporting teammates, and adjusting when the game changed around them.

We connected this skill to real life by talking about removing yourself from risk. If a situation involves alcohol, ma*****na, or other unhealthy choices, you don’t have to stay there. You can make a smart transition by walking away, finding a safer space, and reaching out to trusted teammates for support.

Lesson 11: Walk Away πŸ‘Ÿ
This week, our players learned that one of the smartest decisions you can make when facing pressure is to simply walk away.
On the field, players practiced transition movement β€” reacting quickly when the game changes, finding open space, and moving into better positions to help their team succeed.
Off the field, we connected this skill to real-life situations. Just as players transition when possession changes, they can also choose to leave situations that feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
Walking away from alcohol, ma*****na, or negative influences is not quitting! It's making a smart play.
Through our group discussion and training, players learned that healthy choices often start with recognizing when it's time to move and finding teammates who will support them along the way.

Revisiting the highlights of last week’s President’s Cup! πŸ†βš½οΈβœ¨

Four Days. Five Divisions. One Awesome Celebration!

Over four action-packed days, 316 players across 40 teams competed in 106 matches! From our youngest U8 players to our U17 athletes, every match brought great excitement, team spirit, and a wonderful display of Healthy Play, Healthy Lives πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ©΅

Through our Play Smart, Live Strong lessons and group discussions, athletes explored important life skills that help them make positive decisions both on and off the field. Our Fuel for Performance session also helped prepare our players for their matches and their defensive positioning in real life!

In partnership with the Opioid Proceeds Council, hundreds of players, families, and supporters joined our Healthy Play, Healthy Lives campaign by sharing their commitments through fun photo activities and pledging to make healthy choices, stay substance-free, and support one another.

Thank you to all the hands and hearts that helped make this event a success 🫢🏼
