Emmanuel University Brings Joy, Prayer, and Dance to KCH Children’s Cancer Ward on “Fun Friday”

In a heartwarming display of compassion and community spirit, Emmanuel University visited the children’s cancer ward at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) on Friday, 17th April 2026. The outreach team arrived bearing gifts, spiritual comfort, and high-energy entertainment, transforming a difficult environment into a vibrant celebration of life.

The event, dubbed the "Fun Friday Session," was designed to provide a holistic healing experience for young patients battling cancer. The day began on a solemn yet uplifting note, as the university delegation led a prayer session with the children and their parents. The room fell into a reverent hush as prayers of hope, strength, and healing were offered, providing much-needed spiritual solace to families facing long and arduous treatment journeys.

Following the prayers, the atmosphere shifted from quiet reflection to joyful chaos. The students from Emmanuel University distributed gifts to the children, bringing wide smiles to faces that have seen too much hardship. However, the highlight of the day was the therapeutic sports and dance session.

Led by energetic student volunteers, the children—many accompanied by their parents—participated in adapted physical activities and dancing. Medical staff looked on approvingly as the young patients moved to upbeat music, their laughter echoing through the ward corridors.

“This is more than just play; it is therapy,” explained a lead student organizer. “Movement releases endorphins, and joy boosts the immune system. Today, we wanted them to forget about the IV drips and the treatments, even if just for an hour. We call it ‘Fun Friday’ because for these children, every Friday should feel like a victory.”

Parents, many of whom carry the heavy emotional weight of their children’s illnesses, joined in the dancing. For a few hours, the ward was not a place of sickness but a dance floor of resilience.

Hospital staff at KCH thanked the university for the visit, noting that such psychosocial support is vital to the recovery process. The event concluded with the children clutching their new gifts, exhausted from dancing but visibly happier than when the day began.

Emmanuel University has vowed to continue the "Fun Friday" initiative, hoping to make the last Friday of every month a day of hope for the young warriors of KCH.

Shaping Tomorrow’s Cities: Cohort 5 & 6 Present on Urban Planning in Malawi
Emmanuel University – Today, students from Cohorts 5 and 6 took center stage to deliver a compelling joint presentation on the Principles of Urban Planning in Malawi, demonstrating how academic theory meets on-the-ground reality.

Held in the university’s main lecture hall, the session moved beyond textbook models to tackle Malawi’s unique challenges: rapid urbanization, informal settlements, and climate resilience. The presenters anchored their discussion on key principles such as sustainable land use, integrated transport systems, and participatory governance—all tailored to cities like Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Mzuzu.

A standout segment explored how Malawian urban planners must balance traditional practices with modern zoning laws. The students argued that effective planning in Malawi requires not just maps and bylaws, but deep community engagement, especially in unplanned areas where access to water, sanitation, and electricity remains limited.

“We learned that planning isn’t just about concrete and roads—it’s about dignity and opportunity,” one presenter noted. “For Malawi, the principle of ‘planning with, not for’ people is non-negotiable.”

As Malawi’s urban population continues to grow, today’s presentations made one thing clear: the next generation of planners is already here, and they are ready to build smarter, fairer, and greener cities.

Well done to Cohorts 5 and 6 for an inspiring session!

🌍 A British perspective. A Malawian community. One shared goal: Safeguarding for all.

On 10th April 2026, Emmanuel University in Lilongwe hosted UK specialist Naomi Shrubsole for a powerful dialogue on protecting children and vulnerable adults.

The question wasn't "copy-paste" – but learn, adapt, and respect.

Key takeaway? Malawi doesn't need a photocopy of British policy. We need a hybrid model that honors chiefs, families, and the value of Umboni (bearing witness), while ensuring accountability.

Embracing Excellence: Seminar on Quality Transformative Ethics in Industry and Higher Education.

LILONGWE – In an era where quality assurance is becoming the cornerstone of both academic and industrial success, a unique opportunity is arising for professionals and educators in Malawi. Emmanuel University is set to host a pivotal seminar titled "Applying Quality Transformative Ethics in Industry and Higher Education" on Wednesday, 22nd April, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The event will feature Dr. Kim Stansfield, a distinguished British Chartered Engineer whose career bridges high-level industry, government collaboration, and academia. Dr. Stansfield, also a committed Christian, brings a wealth of experience in business transformation and the practical application of quality systems and international standards.

A Legacy of Innovation in Quality
Dr. Stansfield's career began at the forefront of technology, working in Ministry of Defence (MoD) research with the Composite Materials Group at the UK Royal Aerospace Establishment. He later transitioned to the private sector at Lucas Engineering and Systems, where he contributed to a BRITE/EuRAM collaboration focused on developing quality-assured, automated design and manufacturing processes for aerospace composite components.

This hands-on experience provided him with deep insights into Japanese Total Quality Management (TQM) methods before he moved into the realm of large enterprise information systems. His career then took him to the UK Energy Technology Institute—a unique collaboration between the UK government and the energy industry—where he applied advanced Quality Function Deployment (QFD) methods to support the design and development of sustainable renewable energy programmes.

Dr. Stansfield’s contributions to the field have not gone unnoticed. In 2016, he was awarded the prestigious Akao Prize, named after the co-developer of QFD, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the advancement of Quality Function Deployment.

Since 2010, he has served as the UK representative on the International Standards Development team for the ISO 16355 standard for Modern QFD. He joined the University of Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) as a Senior Teaching Fellow, becoming an Associate Professor in 2018 before his partial retirement at the end of 2020. In 2022, he was elected as an associate Academician of the International Academy of Quality, achieving full Academician status in 2025. He currently serves as an active member and co-chair of the Academy’s Voice of the Customer Think Tank (VoCTT).

A Commitment to Quality in Malawi
The seminar aligns perfectly with Emmanuel University’s mission to promote the highest standards of education. In 2025, the university took a significant step forward by appointing its first Director of Quality Assurance. Since then, it has developed a comprehensive Quality Assurance Manual and Systems, currently being implemented to not just meet, but exceed, the minimum standards set by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

Event Details and Registration
This is a rare chance to learn from a global expert in quality transformation and ethics. The seminar will take place at the Emmanuel University Campus, located in Area 43 off Ufulu Gardens Road, Lilongwe. A refreshment break will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Attendance requires registration, which includes a nominal charge of 40,000.00 MK. This fee covers refreshments and an official attendance certificate. Due to limited space, interested attendees are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.

To reserve a place, please contact Gloria on 0998604410. All are welcome to attend and be part of advancing the conversation on quality in Malawi.

On Friday, 6th March 2026, Emmanuel University took a significant step in its commitment to academic excellence by hosting a specialized training session on the Malawi Higher Education Qualifications Framework (MHEQF).

The workshop brought together our dedicated academic staff and curriculum designers to focus on aligning our module learning outcomes with national standards. The session provided an in-depth look at the MHEQF descriptors, which define the expected knowledge, skills, and competencies for each level of higher education.

A key highlight of the training was the practical application of these standards. Our team engaged in exercises to review current modules, ensuring that learning outcomes and assessments accurately reflect the intended level of study. Facilitators guided participants on identifying cognitive demand through specific verbs and adjectives, reinforcing that modules within a single program can—and should—span different levels to ensure progressive student development.

By ensuring our assessments are perfectly aligned with learning outcomes, we are strengthening academic integrity and enhancing the educational experience for our students. This initiative is part of our ongoing dedication to meeting and exceeding national quality standards, preparing our graduates for success on both a national and international stage.

On this solemn Martyrs' Day, the Emmanuel University community pauses to honor the indelible legacy of the faithful witnesses who paved the way with their sacrifice. Their courage is our foundation, and their devotion is our eternal challenge. Today, we remember that the greatest testimony is a life—and even a death—lived for Christ. We are because they were. 💚

"Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." Romans 8:35-37
