Mua Deaf School is one of only four schools in Malawi that offer the hope of a viable future for deaf children. Mua has 170 pupils who are all boarders.

Since 1986, Mua Deaf School has been offering a lifeline for deaf children. The pupils are aged between seven and 16 and come from all over the country - too far to travel home every day. They come to learn how to read, write and sign. This gives them the life skills they need to find their place in Malawian society. Founded by Catholic monks, the school retains links with the mission at Mua. Howe

In April 2024 Tiina and Kevin, two team members from Friends of Mua, visited the Deaf School. They bought some supplies in Dedza and made arrangements with Parish Priest Fr. Christian for the donation of 333 bags of maize as assistance for the 2024/2025 school year. Many thanks to the nuns and priests of Mua for their generous welcome to us. Our thanks also go to AVIS Malawi, who kindly gave us a discount on our vehicle rental.

In recent months Friends of Mua have been fundraising to buy 10 new Singer sewing machines. We are very pleased that they were safely delivered to Mua School for Deaf Children on the 29th of March. See attached photos of 'Operation Singer' and a letter of thanks from the headmaster for the generous support! Thank you to everyone who donated! With the new machines it should be possible for each student to work at their own machine during tailoring classes instead of sharing.

FRIENDS OF MUA VISIT TO DEAF SCHOOL: In September four of us from "Friends of Mua" (Tiina, Triin, Niki and Kevin) visited the school at the start of the semester. We were pleased to spend a week with our good friends in Malawi, to meet the Headmaster Henry Chiwaya and many of the teachers, who are all doing a wonderful job teaching deaf learners and we enjoyed the drum and dance that some children put on for us. We also met the sisters who look after the children in the hostels. We brought gifts including toys, games and food. THANK YOU to everyone at Mua for your hospitality. We were sorry to leave and look forward to our next visit! Here are some photos:

NEW COMPUTERS FOR THE STUDENTS! Representatives of the Norwich Dedza Partnership recently made another visit to the School (for their previous visit see news 12th June 2016). They met Jailosi Gama the deputy head and Maurice Manda the IT teacher. They left three Notebook computers, two general purpose machines and one with hearing test software installed. They were shown some computers which a team from Glasgow donated last year. Currently the school has 12 working desktop computers, one non-working desktop computer and the three Notebooks donated by the Norwich Dedza Partnership. However, the students cannot print their work because the school printer has no ink. „Friends of Mua“ will be very grateful for donations to enable us to buy sets of print cartridges for the school’s HP364 printer.

Donations of 400 kg of beans were delivered to the sisters in time for the beginning of the autumn term. Earlier this year a larger donation enabled the Parish of Mua to purchase and store enough maize to meet most of the school’s maize shortfall for the coming year.
Please continue to donate so that we can buy more beans, rice, salt, cooking oil and chicken!
