Meet Nancy Banda – Tailor, Instructor & Empowered Ngwazi - Nancywylin Yokonie

I am a proud beneficiary of the Ngwazi initiative.

My name is Nancy Banda, a passionate Tailoring and Fashion Design instructor currently serving at Nansomba Technical College in Mulanje. My technical journey began between 2016 and 2019 at Soche Technical College and DAPP Mikolongwe Vocational School, where I earned City & Guilds, Trade Test, and TEVET qualifications.

The road wasn’t easy. Choosing tailoring wasn’t widely supported. I faced discouragement from some family members, friends, and neighbors who didn’t believe in the power of skills training. But thanks to my parents’ unshakable support, I stayed the course and pushed through.

My hard work paid off, I became a top performer in class. From there, I opened my own tailoring shop at Goliath Trading Centre, then went on to teach at Kings and Angels Tailoring School in Blantyre. Later, I joined Andiamo Technical College in Balaka. Eventually, I secured a government post where I still serve today, while continuing to sew and design clothes to support my family.

To my fellow women, I say this: Never allow anyone to make you doubt your worth. People may talk, but they rarely offer real help. Stay focused, build your skills, and stand strong in your vision. Financial independence is key; marriage may come or go, but your ability to provide for yourself will carry you forward.

To every Ngwazi out there, keep pushing, keep rising. Our hands build dreams.
