Are you a student, emerging leader, young advocate or changemaker who wants to understand how taxation really works and its role in social economic development? Or CSO executive or business professional who wants to know:
1. Why some tax systems fuel economic growth while others stifle it?
2. Where tax revenue actually go, and who benefits?
3. How taxation shape the decisions people make about work, savings, and investment?
Eamonn Butler's An Introduction to Taxation cuts through the noise by highlighting how excessive taxation can negatively affect productivity and economic growth, and how well designed tax systems can help finance essential public services and support societal stability. With historical examples, clear reasoning, and honest analysis, it offers readers a grounded and balanced understanding of what taxation is, how it works, and what it means for all of us.
With generous support from Institute of Economic Affairs through the Whetstone Freedom Fund (WFF), we are proud to make this resource available in Chichewa, bringing these important ideas to even more readers across Malawi and beyond.

On 20 February 2026, MILE formally engaged the District Executive Committee in Mzimba. This was an important step in positioning the institution within Malawi’s district governance framework and advancing its mission of leadership education, governance and youth empowerment. The meeting brought together senior district leadership, including the District Commissioner, the Directorate of Planning and Development, heads of government departments, law enforcement, statutory bodies, and civil society representatives. The wide representation reflected the inclusive and multi sectoral nature of the district’s development architecture.
For MILE, this engagement was more than an introduction. It was a moment of recognition and trust, affirming its role as a partner in advancing Malawi 2063. By presenting its mission and priority programs in leadership development, youth civic education, policy research and capacity building, MILE demonstrated how its work complements district priorities and national aspirations.
The discussions were constructive and forward looking. District officers identified areas where MILE’s contribution could add real value, particularly in nurturing young leaders, strengthening community engagement, and supporting evidence based programming. The Committee welcomed MILE’s participation and encouraged continued collaboration through technical meetings, joint planning, and sustained communication.
This engagement matters because it anchors MILE’s vision in local structures, builds trust with decision makers, and creates pathways for sustainable impact. It laid a strong foundation for translating dialogue into action, ensuring that leadership education becomes a driver of community transformation and national progress.
