𝗔𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻𝗶 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 - 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹

In May last year, Blessings Banda walked across the graduation stage at Mzuzu University with a Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies), full of hope, ambition, and expectation.

But the months that followed were not what he imagined.

For nine months after graduating, Blessings searched for employment. Applications were sent. Emails were written. Interviews were hoped for. Like many graduates, he entered a season of waiting, uncertain, stretching, and humbling.

To survive, he took up piecework while continuing to trust that his breakthrough would come.

Yet his story had always been one of resilience.

Before university, Blessings had already learned to rewrite his narrative.

After completing his secondary education at Ntchisi Secondary School, he repeated Form 4 at Mmbomba Secondary School, improving his MSCE results to 17 points in 2017.

That determination earned him a place at Mzuzu University in 2019.

His university years were later disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that brought academic delays and economic hardship.

But instead of remaining idle during holidays, Blessings began teaching primary school learners in his community. What started as part-time lessons slowly grew abit to Jaguar Private School, yes, just for survival while building the future of children through part-time.

The small income he earned supported his transport and basic needs while reinforcing lessons in discipline, leadership, and stewardship.

So when the waiting season came after graduation, it did not defeat him, it refined him.

Then, in January this year, nine months after graduating, his long-awaited opportunity arrived.

Blessings joined Compassion International Malawi as a Programs Officer and Program Implementer in Kasungu, marking his first formal employment since completing his degree.

Today, he supports program implementation, community engagement, monitoring, and partnership strengthening, contributing to Compassion's mission of releasing children from poverty.

According to Blessings, his qualifications prepared him with essential skills in professional communication, development communication, stakeholder engagement, reporting, corporate responsibility, and principles of management.

"These communication competencies are transferable and enable me to effectively implement activities, engage stakeholders, and support partnerships," he said.

Looking back, Blessings sees purpose in every chapter of his journey:

The improved MSCE results.
The pandemic disruptions.
The small classroom that became a school.
The nine-month wait after graduation.

Each phase was preparation.

To fellow graduates still searching, his message is heartfelt:

"The waiting season is not wasted. Use it to grow, serve, and prepare. With patience, consistency, and faith, doors will open at the right time."

We would like to congratulate Leah Malekano on her recent appointment as Deputy Director responsible for Government Communication at the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology.

Leah, our alumna, graduated in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts(Communication Studies).

Prior to her appointment, she worked with Rainbow Television, and later with Zodiak Broadcasting Station and Times Group, where she gained valuable experience in the media industry.

We wish you all the best, Leah. The department is proud of you.
