Watson Kabaghe, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Laws Campus, has published a study whose results are important for designing sustainable water use strategies thereby allowing Malawi to manage her aquifers wisely and avoiding problems like contamination.
Titled ๐๐๐๐๐๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง ๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ฐ๐๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ก๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ฐ๐๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐๐ฌ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ฐ๐, ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ฐ๐ข, the study looked at how rocks and underground cracks beneath Lilongwe - Malawi's Capital City - affect the quality and movement of groundwater.
The study's results prove that faults and fractures are like underground highways that control both the direction and the quality of groundwater.
"This knowledge is important for designing sustainable water use strategies so that Malawi can manage her aquifers wisely and avoid problems like over-pumping or contamination," the study states.
The study, published with Daniel Kilembe, Chitsanzo Damazio, Dr. Russell Chidya and Associate Professor Maurice Muonjerezi, can be accessed on:

This is Watson's second publication in eight months: the first was published in November, 2025.
Congratulations Watson Kabaghe for raising Unilia's flag in the area of knowledge creation and dissemination!

Laws Campus has donated books to Mantchewe Community Library in Rumphi.
Deputy Principal for Laws Campus, Dr Wezzie Chiziwa, says the donation is part of a programme aimed at inspiring a reading culture and improving literacy in the communities around Laws Campus.
Last year, in November, the campus also donated books to Livingstonia Community Day Secondary School.
In the pictures below, Dr Chiziwa (in a jacket) and the Librarian for Laws Campus, Mr Kaitano Simwaka, (in a blue golf-shirt) are delivering the books to a representative of users of Mantchewe Community Library.
