For the first time in more than a century, a gray wolf has returned to Sequoia National Park.
Wildlife officials recently confirmed the presence of a female gray wolf known as BEY03F inside the park, marking the first documented wolf in Sequoia in over 100 years. After traveling hundreds of miles across California, her arrival represents a remarkable milestone in the recovery of one of North America's most iconic predators.
Gray wolves once roamed throughout much of the western United States, helping maintain balance within ecosystems. By the early 1900s, widespread eradication efforts had eliminated them from many parts of their historic range. Today, their gradual return is being viewed by many conservationists as a sign that damaged ecosystems can recover when given the chance.
For many Indigenous Nations, the wolf is more than a wild animal. Wolves are often regarded as teachers, protectors, and symbols of family, loyalty, wisdom, and balance. Their presence has long held cultural and spiritual significance across Native traditions.
The return of a single wolf may seem small, but history shows that one animal can mark the beginning of something much larger.
More than 100 years later, the howl of the wolf may once again become part of Sequoia's story.
