Vocational Training Opportunity Centre - VTOC

Recently, we had the privilege of welcoming Adeline and 18 young people from Tenom, Sabah to YWCA-VTOC.

Many of these students come from the interior areas of Sabah, where access to opportunities can sometimes be limited. The visit was organised to introduce them to alternative pathways that are available should they choose not to pursue, or be unable to pursue, a university education.

During their visit, they toured our facilities and learned about the vocational programmes offered at VTOC. More importantly, they heard firsthand from our alumni, Sylvia and Tharanee, who shared their personal experiences and how vocational training helped shape their journey.

At YWCA-VTOC, we believe success is not defined by a single pathway.

While university is one option, vocational education is another valuable route that equips young women with practical skills, confidence and opportunities for meaningful employment and financial independence.

Sometimes, all it takes is exposure to a new possibility to help a young person see a future they never imagined for themselves.

We hope this visit planted seeds of inspiration and opened doors to new dreams and opportunities.

💕 Celebrating Mothers, Teachers and the Women Who Shape Our Lives 💕

At VTOC, we recently came together for a special Mother’s Day and Teacher’s Day celebration to honour two groups of women who play an important role in every young person's journey.

A mother is often a child's first teacher.

And a teacher often becomes a guiding figure away from home, offering encouragement, wisdom and support when it is needed most.

For many of our trainees, joining VTOC means stepping out of their comfort zone, living away from home and beginning a new chapter. Along the way, they are surrounded by caring instructors, mentors and staff who help them grow in confidence, discipline and independence.

This celebration was a heartfelt reminder that behind every successful young woman is a community of people who believe in her potential.

Every journey begins with a first step.

For our new trainees, that first step started with registration day, moving into their hostel rooms and saying goodbye to the familiar.

It was a day filled with excitement, curiosity and, for many, a little nervousness too.

That's why Orientation Week at VTOC is designed to help trainees feel at home.

Through team-building activities, new friendships, shared experiences and plenty of fun, trainees begin settling into a supportive community where they can learn and grow together.

We also took them on a tour of Kuala Lumpur city centre which is just a stone's throw away from YWCA KL, allowing them to discover the opportunities, culture and vibrant city that will become part of their learning journey.

To help them start with purpose, trainees created vision boards to map their goals, dreams and aspirations for the future.

Because at VTOC, we believe vocational education is more than learning a skill.

It's about building confidence.
Developing discipline.
Discovering potential.
And creating opportunities for a brighter future.

"I only liked sleeping and doing nothing."

Those were the words Suria shared when reflecting on her journey before joining VTOC.

When she first arrived, she felt anxious, homesick and wanted to return to her hometown in Gombak. Everything felt unfamiliar, and stepping outside her comfort zone wasn't easy.

But sometimes growth begins with taking one brave step.

Through the Beauty Care course at VTOC, Suria gained more than technical skills. She learned discipline, financial literacy and the importance of taking responsibility for her future.

Most importantly, she realised that if she wanted to achieve her dreams and build the life she envisioned, she had to keep moving forward.

Today, her story reminds us that transformation is possible when young women are given the opportunity, guidance and support to grow.
