Why Trainers Fail to Engage
Many trainers think their job is to deliver information. I think differently.
In fact, I've sat through some PPR (PowerPoint reader) presentations that make me cringe.
Being a PPR and dishing out advice is the best way to cure an audience of insomnia. They will go into 'zombie' mode where their eyes are wide open but the brain stops working.
If you want to engage your audience and make a difference, here's a checklist:
β
Have a conversation. Talk with them and not at them. Think of it like meeting up with a great friend to share ideas and a have a good time.
β
Make it practical. Share with them what you have learnt from experience and not just some theory you read somewhere.
β
Connect with stories. Telling some of your own stories can make them sit up an listen as stories trigger emotions. Humans are emotional creatures and when you touch their feelings, you engage them easily.
If you want my full checklist of mistakes to avoid as a presenter, mention checklist in the comment.

Would you dive into the rough seas with no life jacket and swim for 6 hours to save people who traveled with you?
Thatβs exactly what this 12-year old youngster did, overcoming her fear and doubt if she would make it.
Incidents like this remind us that nothing is impossible with a mind thatβs made up. Despite the odds stacked up against her, she took the plunge and persevered till she made it.
This has made me think of what fears I have thatβs keeping me from starting anything.
Lessons from this gutsy youngster:
1οΈβ£ Overthinking can stop us from taking the first few stumbling steps and keep us from greatness.
2οΈβ£ Courage is not the absence of fear but doing something despite the fear.
3οΈβ£ You may not know what obstacles you might face along the journey but when your in the water, youβll figure it out.
If youβre holding yourself back from writing that book, starting a business, getting fit or giving paid to speak or anything at all, just remind yourself what this kid did.

Make Your Message Memorable.
Do you want to make the most impact on your audience?
Like most presenters, I used to mistakenly think that delivering my message was all that matters.
But.. how can anyone apply what you share if they canβt even remember in the first place?
Iβve discovered a simple formula to make your audience retain your message in order to apply and change their results.
You can RISE to the top with these 4 steps:
β
Repeatable. Ensure they can repeat your message after your presentation. Use stories, metaphor, analogies or frameworks to do that. Just like Iβm using the acronym RISE to help you remember my points!
β
Interest. Keep it relevant based on what interests them the most. Focus your content on solving thier unique problems with relatable examples and case studies.
β
Stand out. Highlight key points. Ask them to take note or write them down. They may miss whatβs important unless you tell them.
β
Emotions. We forget what we hear but not what we feel. Feelings are βmental glueβ. Touching their emotions with your message will make both you and your presentation memorable.
These are some ways in which I make my message stick.
If you found these tips useful, do let me know and Iβll be happy to share some more.

From Training to Transformation.
It took me a long time to understand one thing.
The purpose of training was not an end in itself but an improvement in my audienceβs lives.
Once I got that, my training began to get a new makeover.
I worked on the desired results my audience wanted and worked backwards to create appropriate content.
Do you make the mistake what I used to make - putting together some content and then hoping someone will sign up. Do these instead:
β
Ask your target audience what their greatest frustrations are.
β
Ask yourself what methods you have found that can help them overcome their challenges.
β
Do as much and intense research as you can to add value to what you already have.
Do these and your audience will be grateful for the transformation you provide them.

Today, my heart is full.
Iβm deeply honoured to have earned the Master Trainer Certification from Association for Talent Development (ATD) β a milestone Iβll cherish.
A huge thank you to HRDC for making this journey possible and for believing in the growth of trainers like me. And to ATD, our amazing facilitator and every member of my amazing cohort β your guidance, support, and friendship gave this achievement so much meaning.
This isnβt just a certification.
Itβs a reminder of why I do what I do β to keep learning, keep growing, and keep empowering others to shine.
Grateful. Proud. Inspired.
