The Chief Digital Officer’s (CDO) Office and Ernst & Young (EY) organised an engagement session today at the Grand Margherita Hotel for the ongoing 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐤 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭.

Today's workshop targeted the 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 sector in Sarawak, with the aim to review, align, validate and refine findings by specifically focusing on the talent development strategy and governance framework.

The engagement further assesses the current industry talent landscape to evaluate the supply and demand of Sarawak workforce and to assess the availability, capability and compensation expectations of both the existing workforce and new entrants.

The Sarawak Talent Development Policy, spearheaded by the 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 is a strategic initiative designed to cultivate a workforce of 500,000 skilled professionals by 2030. This policy serves as a blueprint to transform Sarawak into a high-income, technology-ready economy.

Recently, the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Chief Digital Officer's Office had the privilege of hosting a highly productive networking dinner with key institutional and industry partners.

The UNIMAS CDO Office works closely with industry leaders to drive the broader digital transformation agenda. This engaging evening served as a vital platform to bridge the gap between academia and industry, with discussions focusing heavily on accelerating collaborative digital projects and exploring shared visions. It successfully strengthened the foundation for future, high-impact synergies between UNIMAS and these esteemed organisations.

The high-level session brought together Chief Digital Officers (CDOs), Google Ambassadors from various universities, and tech experts from Google and Awantec to discuss the deployment and adoption of Gemini AI Pro and NotebookLM Enterprise in higher education.

The UNIMAS Chief Digital Officer’s Office and EY led another critical engagement session today at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) for the ongoing Sarawak Talent Development Sectoral Workshop.

Dedicating this session to the Forestry, Natural Asset Management, and Conservation sector, the collaborative effort focused on mapping complex workforce demands to ensure a highly skilled talent pool capable of driving Sarawak's long-term sustainability and environmental goals.

The session was distinguished by Opening Remarks from Datuk Amar Jaul Samion, who concurrently served as the primary Subject Matter Expert for the workshop. His authoritative insights provided a crucial foundation for understanding the complex, specialised talent demands required to navigate the state's paradigm shift towards sustainable energy and resource management.

As Sarawak boldly positions itself as a regional leader in the green economy and sustainable resource extraction, aligning human capital with the rigorous technical requirements of these industries is essential to maintain industrial resilience and environmental compliance.

Prof. Dr. Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim, the Chief Digital Officer of UNIMAS, attended an exclusive benchmarking visit to the 𝐇𝐔𝐀𝐖𝐄𝐈 𝐀𝐈 𝐋𝐚𝐛 & 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝟏𝟎𝟔, 𝐓𝐮𝐧 𝐑𝐚𝐳𝐚𝐤 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 (𝐓𝐑𝐗), 𝐊𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐋𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐫, 𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟏 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔. The Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), Malaysia, organised the visit, which was also attended by the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia, YBhg. Datuk Ts. Dr. Mohd Nor Azman bin Hassan.

This strategic engagement focused on exploring the latest advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and developing sustainable digital ecosystems, directly aligning with the frameworks for the 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐈 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 (𝐀𝐈𝐂𝐂) 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐈 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐬 (𝐀𝐈𝐏𝐋) outlined in AICC for MOHE.

This benchmarking visit marks a massive leap forward for the future of UNIMAS, paving the way for a fully smart campus ecosystem. By taking advantage of the many benefits of using these advanced AI and secure network systems, UNIMAS is planning to transform classroom teaching, speed up scientific research, and improve how the administration works. Following the successful commencement of our state-wide talent mapping initiative, Day 2 of the Sarawak Talent Development Sectoral Workshop convened today, dedicating its focus to the strategic Manufacturing and SME Development sector.

The session opened with insightful remarks by Mdm Anelia Anak Siam, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak. This was followed by a compelling Keynote Address from Mr Shariman Jamil, Chief Executive Officer of SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd, who highlighted the critical demand for highly skilled, specialised talent to drive Sarawak’s rapidly advancing high-tech manufacturing and semiconductor industries.

Aligning human capital with the specific needs of this sector is paramount to accelerating Sarawak's industrialisation agenda and ensuring global competitiveness.

We extend our appreciation to the key industry stakeholders and agencies whose active participation and frontline insights are key to bridging the talent-industry gap, namely the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak (MINTRED), SMD Semiconductor Sdn. Bhd., X-Fab Sarawak Sdn. Bhd., Melexis (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., and various other prominent manufacturing sector representatives.

As a core collaborative partner alongside MEITD and EY, the UNIMAS Chief Digital Officer's Office continues to play an instrumental role in this project. The Sarawak Talent Development Sectoral Workshop officially commenced today. This strategic initiative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Innovation & Talent Development (MEITD), Ernst & Young (EY) alongside strategic partner UNIMAS Chief Digital Officer’s Office, Chemsain, and UTS, aims to identify, align, and address critical skills mismatches, systematically mapping human capital requirements against the 15 socio-economic sectors and enablers delineated in the 13th Malaysia Plan for Sarawak.

Significantly, this inaugural session was dedicated specifically to the Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Creative Industries sector. The workshop was officiated by YB Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, whose address underscored the importance of building a resilient, future-ready workforce to drive the state's economic aspirations. Furthermore, a keynote address by Datu Hii Chang Kee provided an in-depth analysis of the specific workforce gaps that require targeted intervention within the industry.

Focusing on these strategic talent requirements is both timely and essential. As a rapidly expanding industry, the tourism sector serves as the second cornerstone of Sarawak’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), demanding a highly skilled and adaptable workforce to sustain its upward trajectory.

It was an engaging session, bringing together a variety of ministries and agencies, such as the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED), Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), Business Events Sarawak (BES), Cat City Holidays Sdn. Bhd., Tanoti Crafts, and TVS.

This session marks the beginning of a comprehensive, state-wide talent mapping exercise. As a core part of the Ernst & Young (EY) ex*****on team, the UNIMAS Chief Digital Officer’s Office remains central to this development, leveraging our research expertise and data capabilities to drive subsequent sectoral workshops in the near future. Through this continued contribution, UNIMAS ensures a holistic, data-driven framework to support Sarawak's human capital development and state policymaking.
