LIFELONG, LIFEWIDE, OR BOTH?
As OUM learners, you’re already familiar with the idea of lifelong learning. But have you heard of lifewide learning?
The 2026–2035 Malaysia Higher Education Blueprint introduces lifewide learning as a shift beyond traditional, structured, and formal modes of study. But how does it differ from lifelong learning?
Think of it this way:
Lifelong learning is learning across time: the continuous pursuit of knowledge throughout life, from childhood to old age.
Lifewide learning is learning across contexts: the insights we gain through the many experiences, environments, and roles that shape our lives.
One emphasises duration; the other emphasises breadth.
Together, these perspectives remind us that learning is about more than certificates and qualifications. It should become a natural part of how we live, work, connect with others, and grow as human beings.
So, how can you become both a lifelong and lifewide learner?
Start by recognising that learning doesn’t just happen in lecture halls or formal programmes. Pursue your interests and hobbies. Seek out new experiences. Reflect on areas where you can improve and grow.
Then, explore learning opportunities wherever they exist, through online communities, mentorship programmes, workshops, conferences, volunteer work, or even mobile apps.
Just as importantly, document your progress so you can appreciate how far you’ve come.
Above all, stay adaptable. Be willing to revise your goals as your interests, circumstances, and aspirations evolve.
After all, learning is not linear; it is multifaceted.
Every learning experience is an investment in self-improvement, a celebration of curiosity, and an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the world around you.
