Have You Clocked It Yet?

Just when we think we’ve mastered English, a new expression comes along and reminds us that language never stands still.

The latest phrase making the rounds among younger speakers is “clock it.” No, it has nothing to do with telling the time! In contemporary usage, it means to notice, recognise, understand, or pick up on something that others may have missed.

For English language educators, this is a timely reminder that language is a living, evolving phenomenon. New words and expressions emerge through social media, popular culture, and everyday interactions, reflecting the creativity and identity of their users.

As teachers, do we embrace these changes, ignore them, or use them as opportunities to discuss language variation and change in our classrooms?

We’d love to hear from you:

• Have you recently come across a word or phrase that left you puzzled?
• What is the most interesting piece of Gen Z slang you’ve encountered?
• Should contemporary slang have a place in English language lessons?

If you’ve already clocked this expression, share another one we should know about!

MELTA responds…

We are relieved to learn that full stops may now be considered offensive by some members of Gen Z.

As language educators, we would like to reassure everyone that punctuation marks have no intention of hurting feelings. Commas are simply pausing for breath, semicolons are trying their best to stay relevant, and apostrophes continue to seek protection from widespread misuse.

That said, MELTA remains committed to fostering effective communication across generations. If a full stop appears too abrupt, we encourage the strategic deployment of emojis 😊, ellipses…, or the timeless Malaysian solution: adding “lah” at the end of the sentence.

We also remind our members that while punctuation norms may evolve, clarity remains important. After all, there is a considerable difference between:

Let’s eat, students.

and

Let’s eat students.

One missing punctuation mark can have serious consequences.

Warm regards,

MELTA
