The world does not need more instruction. It needs better education.
Education is not about delivering information. It is about developing thinking, independence, and confidence.
Montessori education focuses on the whole child, not just academic outcomes.
That is why it continues to matter.

You don’t need experience to begin.
Many of our students start with a passion for education, not a formal background.
What matters is your willingness to learn, to observe, and to grow.
Montessori teaching is a journey of understanding the child and yourself.
Every journey starts somewhere.

Who teaches your teachers matters.
At Headstart, our lecturers are not removed from the classroom.
They run schools. They lead environments. They work with children every day.
This means our training is grounded in real experience, not just theory.
And that makes a difference in the kind of educator you become.

Rewards and punishments do not build discipline.
They build dependency.
In Montessori, discipline develops from within. Through repetition, concentration, and meaningful work, children begin to regulate themselves.
They are not working for approval. They are working for understanding.
That is the difference.

A New Chapter for Headstart Montessori Teacher Training College
After more than 40 years of dedication to Montessori education, Dr Lindsay van den Berg has announced that she will retire, with her last official working day on 30 October 2026.
Dr Lindsay’s contribution to Montessori education has shaped generations of teachers, classrooms, and children. Through her passion, knowledge, and unwavering commitment to the Montessori philosophy, she has built a legacy that will continue for many years to come.
As Headstart enters this new chapter, we are delighted to announce that Laura Connor will be stepping into Dr Lindsay’s role.
Laura’s Montessori journey has deep roots with Headstart. She completed both her Pre-Primary and Elementary Montessori training under Dr Lindsay’s guidance and has continued to grow as a dedicated Montessorian and educator. She is currently the founding head of One Tree Montessori in Swakopmund, a thriving and respected Montessori school.
Having worked closely together on many projects over the years, Dr Lindsay has every confidence that Laura, together with Rauna and the Headstart team, will continue to nurture and grow the college with the same passion, dedication, and commitment to authentic Montessori education.
“Knowing that the college and lab classes will be in such capable hands allows me to step into retirement with complete confidence.” – Dr Lindsay van den Berg
During this transition period, Dr Lindsay will continue to support the team, ensuring a smooth and thoughtful handover.
While this marks the end of one chapter, it also celebrates the beginning of another. One built on the same foundation of respect for the child, excellence in teacher training, and a lifelong commitment to Montessori education.
Please join us in thanking Dr Lindsay for her extraordinary contribution and in welcoming Laura as Headstart moves forward.

The most misunderstood Montessori concept is freedom.
Freedom does not mean doing anything at any time.
It means choosing meaningful work. Respecting the environment. Developing self-discipline over time.
Freedom without structure leads to chaos. Structure without freedom limits development.
Montessori is the balance between the two.

Our students don’t just study Montessori. They experience it.
At Headstart, learning takes place both online and in person.
Through Google Classroom, students engage with theory and guided learning.
Through practical sessions in Walvis Bay, they work directly with Montessori materials.
Because Montessori cannot be fully understood through theory alone.
It must be seen. Touched. Practised.

Montessori teaching requires a shift.
You are not the centre of the classroom. You are not constantly directing. You are not filling every silence.
Instead, you are observing. Guiding. Trusting.
And that requires patience, awareness, and humility.
This approach is not for everyone, but for those who understand it, it changes everything.
Do you resonate with this way of teaching?
