An International Community of Learners Windhoek International School (WIS) was founded in December 1990, the year in which Namibia achieved independence.

We opened our doors to our first students in January 1991 and in 2020 we proudly celebrated our 30th birthday. The school was founded to serve the needs of the children of the international community in Namibia and of those Namibian families who are attracted by the unique international character of the school and who share its philosophy and objectives. On the last day of school, the WIS Primary School students and staff gave a tunnel of thanks for outgoing Primary Principal Ms Jenna Brown, and outgoing teachers Mandy Liedke, Stephanie Morgan, and retiring Educational Assistant Ms Sigrid Ndadi who has been WIS’s longest-serving staff member. !

Our appreciation and thanks to the United Nations Namibia for convening our grade 3 students around ideas for how to improve our communities, protect human rights, and further the SDG goals. Our students and teachers felt it was a meaningful learning experience!

A group of 140 first-time visitors attended a gathering at the UN campus in Klein Windhoek earlier this month to participate in a session of information sharing and cultural exchange. The group, comprising learners only, represented six different schools. They participated in the annual UN4U and SDC Educational Outreach.

The WIS Grade 4&5 candle ceremony represents the handover of responsibility from one class to the next. It is a recognition of the leadership displayed by the PYP Class of 2026, and an expression of confidence in the PYP Class of 2027. As the grade 4 become the next grade 5, we recognise that they Will increasingly embody the values enshrined within the IB Learner Profile: WIS Kids truly are inquirers, caring, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective.

Anyone can learn to speak Chinese! WIS is delighted to announce that Chinese (Mandarin) language learning classes will be offered on WIS campus starting in August.

WIS students, teachers and families from Grade 5 and Grade 10 are thankful for the generosity of H.E. Ambassador Zhao Weiping and Mrs Gong Mei for hosting the first-ever Open Day at the Chinese Embassy Windhoek! Our talented Chinese students wowed all who attended. WIS will be offering Mandarin Language Acquisition through the Confucius Institute starting in August 2026. This is just one of many ways that WIS and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, Windhoek are partnering to bring international mindedness and a celebration of Chinese culture to Namibia.
