Amanda Maria Sousa Oliveira first approached a church in Joinville, Santa Catarina, telling a pastor she had fled abuse in the northern state of Pará.

The congregation provided financial assistance and connected her with a family willing to take her in.

The couple paid for her medications including Mounjaro, an adult diabetes drug, threw her a 12th birthday party, and were actively planning to legally adopt her.

When the family noticed how adult she looked, she had a ready explanation.

She claimed forced hormone treatments in childhood had altered her appearance and that years of abuse from her father had aged her prematurely. The family believed her.

The details of her previous cons are extraordinary. Investigators linked her to similar schemes across at least seven Brazilian states.

In a 2023 case in Nova Iguaçu, she posed as a 12-year-old named Maria Eduarda, claimed to be autistic, and convinced a former city councillor to rent and furnish a home for her.
