7 Mistakes That Stop You From Getting Band 7 in IELTS

Getting a band 7 in is pretty easy if you know and follow the right precepts. After teaching IELTS for a very long time, I've identified seven mistakes that prevent people from getting band 7, and these must be avoided. Let's talk about them.

1. Not learning the structure of the exam. Some students failed to take into cognitive the structure of the exam such as the different writing tasks, question types in Listening and Reading, and so on. Learning the structure is your first step to getting band 7.

2. Ignorant of the examiner's interest. Some students don't even understand what the examiner wants or what it means to get band 7. You can check this in the public band descriptor for the Writing and Speaking module.

3. Omitting certain grammatical rules, including comma splice. There are different grammatical mistakes that students make, and on top of the list is comma splice. It's unfortunate that some students don't even know they make them.

4. Inability to work on mistakes. Some students don't take time to fully evaluate their mistakes; rather, they jump to the next exercise. That's a poor and inefficient way to practise. All mistakes must be carefully evaluated.

5. Not keeping the right mental framework. Some students are already tensed before taking the test. Sometimes, this is evidence of lack of adequate preparation, rest, and self-confidence. Understand that to ace the IELTS, you must be calm and sane.

6. Deceptive practicing. Some students are not true to themselves during practice. It's only wisdom to source for a tutor when you know that self or communal practice isn't working for you.

7. Weak time management. Some students haven't learnt to manage time efficiently. They spend too much time answering certain questions. This is an error that needs to be corrected.

And so on. The shocking part here is that some students cannot identify their mistakes. They want to improve on their scores, but they seem not to be able to.

Tell you something I don't think I've ever told anyone. At first, I was quite skeptical about this meeting.

I mean, it's gonna be our very first edition. I thought: how will it go? Will it be successful?

Now, I have no doubt about the capacity of the facilitator. I mean, she never falls short of intellectual depth and psychological insight. That's one of the reasons she's our manager.

But I was fearful because of the uncertainty of the situation.

We had advertised and greatly promoted the conference, so much that everybody was expecting a whole lot from it.

I felt the weight of that responsibility.

I guess that's what made me anxious.

But guess what?

It turned out to be a beautiful experience.

We learnt, laughed, connected, shared ideas, and genuinely had fun.

The feedback was massive and highly encouraging. I looked at it and exclaimed:

we've literally impacted people's lives.

The joy was indescribable.

"The Only Problem I Have With IELTS Writing is Inability to Generate Ideas"

I hear this complaint quite often. Many students who reach out to me lament the mental block they encounter when asked to write an essay.

The issue is almost always the same: I don't have anything to write about.

So they ask how to overcome this challenge. Well, my answer is always the same: write daily. The more you write on a particular topic, for instance, crime and punishment, the more familiar you become with it. Consequently, when you are eventually given an essay on that topic, it becomes easy for you to express your thoughts. The ideas begin to flow, naturally.

Another effective strategy is to research specific topics and compile relevant words related to them.

Make it a habit to review and recite these words daily. More importantly, use them in your everyday conversations. The goal is simple: let these words become part of your natural expression. I usually recommend mastering at least 10–15 topic-specific words for common IELTS essay topics.

Once you do this consistently, writing becomes significantly easier. Those words serve as your idea bank. When they are readily accessible, writing your essay becomes almost effortless.
