From Dropping Out of OAU to Becoming Best Student at UNILAG: Meet First Class Graduate🎓 with CGPA of 4.91, Akano Abisola Elizabeth

She wrote, "I finished my secondary education in 2015 and gained admission into OAU to study Biochemistry. I started failing from my first semester which was weird because I knew I was a bright student. By the end of my second year, I was advised to withdraw because my CGPA had gone lower than 1.0, so I dropped out in 2018.

"I was broken and wasn't sure that school was meant for me. With the support of my family, I tried again. I took JAMB in 2019 to study Economics Education in the University of Lagos. I got in very uncertain about the future but with one resolve, I will never fail again. With the help of God, I never failed again. I never got below a B in any course.

"I graduated with a first class. Not only a first class but as a Best Graduating student.

"I am Akano Abisola Elizabeth, Bachelor of Science in Education (Education Economics), with a CGPA of 4.91."

Oyiza Emerges Winner of Best Poetry Collection for 2026 Africa Laureate Awards

Nigerian writer and poet, Salmah Oyiza Salam has emerged winner of the Best Poetry Collection for the prestigious Africa Laureate Awards 2026.

The Africa Laureate Awards is a prominent platform for the celebration of literary excellence across the continent and the broader African Diaspora.

The prestigious award to Ms Oiza is given by The Africa Laureate Awards (TALA), a body established to highlight literary excellence and significant contributions to the literary world.

Oyiza who hails from Kogi state, and based in the United Kingdom won the coveted title for the Best Poetry Collection, with her work titled “‘Foreign in a Long-Familiar Leap Year.”

The winner poetry collection was chosen for its originality, emotional depth, its long-lasting relevance and for standing out among other entries for its craftsmanship and ability to engage the reader with its thoughtful poetic expression.

According to the citation for the award, noted that the collection is characterized by “originality, care, and lasting relevance—a hallmark of the poetry collection in the realm of contemporary poetry.”

This selection places Salmah Salam Oiza among a growing list of writers who continue to shape the world of modern literature. With this award to Salmah Salam Oiza for the poetry collection ‘Foreign in a Long-Familiar Leap Year’, the work is now recognized as one of the prominent poetry collections celebrated during the TALA 2026 Awards.

Amazing: Today, I was shortlisted among the best graduating students from my department (Arabic and Islamic Studies). But honestly, that’s not even the main point.

Those who were close to me during my undergraduate days truly know how tough the journey was. The struggles, the pressure, the moments of doubt, nothing came easy.
Standing here today in front of the small business that supported me throughout my studies, I can only say a very big thank you to my amazing customers and my Facebook brothers and sisters who believed in me and supported me from the very beginning till now. May Allah reward you all abundantly.

I pray that Allah eases the affairs of all students and grants them success in their pursuits.
Lastly, to my fellow students who are still in the university: if you can combine your studies with a business, handwork, or any skill at all, please do. It may not be easy at first, but the joy and fulfillment at the end are worth it.
