My mother-in-law gifted my 8-year-old adopted daughter a "birthday cake" with a note tucked inside: "EVEN YOUR BIRTH PARENTS DIDN’T WANT YOU" — I ensured karma put her in her place.

Eight years ago, we brought Lila into our lives when she was just three days old. After numerous unsuccessful pregnancies, she became our little miracle. However, my mother-in-law, Beverly, has never embraced her.

"That child will never be my granddaughter," she remarked. "I don't care how many papers you sign."

Today marked Lila's eighth birthday.

Since breakfast, Lila had been eagerly anticipating the "special cake" that her grandmother Beverly had promised to bring.

"Mom, when is Grandma getting here?" she inquired repeatedly. "She said she had a present I’d never forget!"

More than fifty guests attended the celebration that afternoon. Beverly arrived late, clutching a white bakery box adorned with a gold ribbon.

She bypassed me and knelt down in front of Lila.

"This one is just for you, sweetheart," she stated.

Lila's entire face brightened.

Beverly beamed. "Open it NOW. Let everyone see."

Lila tugged at the ribbon and lifted the lid.

Inside, there was no cake—only a note:

"YOU’RE NOT ONE OF US. EVEN YOUR REAL PARENTS DIDN’T WANT YOU."

For a brief moment, the whole room appeared to go quiet.

Lila's smile vanished so quickly it almost seemed unreal.

"Mom?" she murmured.

Beverly was grinning as if she had just shared the wittiest joke in the gathering.

"How could you?" Caleb asked, taken aback.

But I didn't give Beverly the public reaction she was so clearly looking for.

I gently placed Lila into Caleb's embrace, then took out my phone.

"Before anyone decides Beverly is telling the truth," I proclaimed, my voice resonating across the yard, "you all need to see THIS."

I connected my phone to the outdoor screen that Caleb had prepared for Lila's birthday slideshow.

I hit play. The video illuminated the screen. ⬇️
