# Àlùwàlá Olóngbò: When Insecurity Becomes a Political Tool

1. "Àlùwàlá olóngbò, ọgbọ́n àti-kẹ́ran jẹ ni."

"The cat's ablution does not extend beyond a trick to steal meat from the pot."

2. This old Yoruba proverb describes a cat licking its paws and face. To the unsuspecting observer, it may appear to be performing some noble act of cleanliness. In reality, however, the cat is merely wiping away traces of the meat it has stolen—or preparing itself for another raid on the kitchen.

3. Sadly, the proverb perfectly captures the conduct of those who exploit kidnapping, banditry, and insecurity in Nigeria for partisan political gain.

4. No reasonable person denies that insecurity is a grave problem. Every kidnapping leaves families traumatized. Every innocent life lost diminishes us as a nation. Citizens have every right to demand accountability, better security, and effective governance from those entrusted with public office.

5. Yet there are individuals and groups who seem less interested in solving these problems than in weaponizing them. Rather than seeking solutions, they selectively amplify tragedies, distort facts, spread suspicion, and exploit the suffering of victims to advance political narratives. Their concern is not the victims but the political advantage that can be extracted from their pain.

6. Such behaviour is deeply irresponsible. Insecurity should unite citizens across political, ethnic, and religious divides. Kidnappers do not ask their victims for party membership cards before striking. Terrorists do not distinguish between supporters and opponents of any government. The victims are ordinary Nigerians.

7. When public safety is reduced to partisan point-scoring, genuine solutions become harder to achieve. The focus shifts from protecting lives to winning arguments. The suffering of citizens becomes a political commodity.

8. Those who truly care about security will criticize failures where necessary, support effective measures wherever they are found, and place the welfare of the people above political calculations.

9. The rest are merely performing the ablution of the cat.

10. Àlùwàlá olóngbò, ọgbọ́n àti-kẹ́ran jẹ ni.
